I re-watched the re-mastered version of this film recently.

One can't help but be amazed by the quietness of the film- something unheard of in modern animation.
Miyazaki has made a gentle, magical masterpiece that contains little action, no fistfights or chase scenes or scary moments..
Even the fantastical elements are limited in scope and frequency.

The magical creatures appear at infrequent intervals and the title creature doesn't make an appearance till about halfway thru the running time!

MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO is almost impossible to describe. i just hope that young children accustomed to the high-energy antics from Pixar, Disney, and Dreamworks can adjust to the leisurely pace and will embrace this film now and in the future.

check it out!

Miyazaki's recent Ponyo mines the same aching sense of quietude, so Totoro isn't quite the last of its kind. wink BTW, look for a Totoro doll in Toy Story 3.

While Ponyo is close in spirit, I have to agree that Totoro is one of a kind, and that is exactly why it is so special. There can never be another film quite like it. That's what I enjoy about all of Hayao's earlier work. Porco Rosso is nothing like Kiki which is nothing like Totoro, etc.

I bought my wife a copy of the Totoro DVD for Christmas. She's got a bunch of little plush Totoro's all over the bed, though she's never seen the film.

We'll be watching it this weekend.

BTW, Miyazaki's just announced he'll be making a sequel to Porco Rosso.

In 2003, Miyazaki also directed a 13 minute sequel to My Neighbor Totoro called Mei and the Kittenbus. Unfortunately the only way to currently see it is to travel to the Ghibli Museum in Japan during one of the months where it's the featured short. I hope they'll eventually release it on disc along with all the other Ghibli museum shorts, cause I can't really afford eight trips to Japan to see them all.

Just today I received my Japanese Blu-Rays of Nausicaä, Laputa and Ponyo. I suspect Totoro will be be among the next Ghibli films to get a Blu-Ray release, and I can't wait to upgrade when it does.

Yes, he directed that one as well. It's a personal fav of mine. One he did not direct but I adore is Whisper Of The Heart. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. Hayao did direct a small dream sequence in the film though.

What do you want Bruce - a wife, a Totoro or a bed? Not clear from your post...

TOTORO is fantastic, a classic!

There is nothing like the mood in Hayazaki's films. Refreshingly free of the moralistic dialogue in the Hollywood equivalent.

I rewatched PONYO and reacted almost completely opposite to my previous viewing.
I still enjoyed the first part but the second half......
SUCKED!
I think I reacted differently in part because I watched on a small monitor. This caused me to focus more on story which is pretty weak. On a big screen the pictorial beauty
probably helped obscure lame plotting.
I guess.

Ponyo- I hated it. Terribly story, hated the background art, and the characters. The animation was “gross”, like the animators vomited onto their animation tables. Awesome score though.

My Neighbor Totoro- I love so many parts of this film. And yes, it’s slow, nothing really important happens. They tried to force fit some drama near the end, which dose’nt quite work. No matter how beautifully the scene played out.

Keep in mind Totoro was always meant to be a short film. It’s intent was to be double billed with the far more serious and depressing Grave of the Fireflies, thus the reason for it's simplicity.

But Miyazaki knows how to write stories about children. They seems so real. The appearance of Totoro at the bus stop is a classic scene which marks up there with the best in film making. (insanely charming) The backgrounds are breathtaking and the score a pure delight.

Porco Rosso- One of my favorite films of all time. A truly “adult” animated film that doesn’t rely on graphic violence, endless dumb jokes and the like.(Granted the fight near the end is pretty brutal! But in a comical way) I suppose its more of a romantic comedy. The airplane animation is stunning. The sound design is impressive. The locations are nicely rendered though a bit simplistic compared to his other films. The film is full of rich personalities who are a delight.

Porco Rosso wasn’t planned as a feature film in the beginning. It too was supposed to be a short film. Miyazaki was contracted to create a short film for airline flights. His original illustrated story drawn like a short manga can be found in books and I suppose online.

BTW, Disney let go of the DVD/Blu Ray license of these films. They are now in new hands and have been re-released at considerably lower prices if you haven't gotten them yet.

Good to know. I still have my older Japanese R2 DVDs., but I'd like to get the domestic blu-rays at some point.
