This morning on my way to work I was listening to Williams' beautiful THE COWBOYS, a truly enjoyable, Americana-tinged, Copland-esque effort from the Maestro.

I think it's about time the heroic labels come to the rescue of this gem and produce at least a remastered reissue. The Varèse 1994 CD presents a nice program (with a couple of bonus tracks scattered around), but it's plagued by a horrendous fake stereo mix (the strings are all on the right channel, while woodwinds and brass are on the left--well, at least in my copy). The beautiful orchestral textures of this score really cries out for a better, decent sound.

However, it would be nice to have a true definitive edition, combining all the cues from the original promo LP and the Varèse CD (including also the "Overture", "Entr'acte" and "Exit Music" that Williams wrote for roadshow presentations of the movie).

It sounds like a perfect job for Redman, Matessino and the FSM gang!

God, I love that score. Agreed on all points.

Agreed, too. It's an excellent score. One of my favorite westerns.

I have the reverse-channel edition too, but am not bothered by it in the slightest. I think it's a perfect CD just the way it is. Here's my earlier thread on it:

I'm sure that if it's available for license, somebody is working on it. It's kind of a no-brainer....I prefer the concert overture myself.

This is my favourite Williams Americana score and I would buy an expansion/remaster in the time it takes to shoot John Wayne in the back!

Well, at least a corrected version would be welcome. As I said, the beautiful orchestral textures of this score need a proper remastering.

I hope Matessino and Redman will work on this one eventually. Or maybe a sparkling new recording by Tribute Film Classics!

According to MV, the rights to most of the 1990s Varese CDs are with Varese.

I'd love to see this as well, Maurizio!

Luckily, no one can force you to buy a reissue if you don't want to. (See also: an expansion.) I'm scared to buy this album in case I buy it and the next day we get an expanded or complete release... I'd like to put a hold on the double-dipping!

I also like the Varese issue, and feel a re issue a not needed.Plenty of other scores to issue on CD without digging up old scores that are perfectly good to listen to,as they are.

That theme has strong similarity to a theme in Conrack and the theme for Superman's "dad." JFK, as you say, to a certain extent as well. There are also differences so whether or not this qualifies as a Hornerism is up for debate. I don't really see it that way.

However, all have melodies built around that jump up to a major fitth which seems to convey a kind of nobility whether its the father-figure teacher in Conrack, the father-figure to Superman, the father figure of the John Wayne character and, yes, I suppose the nobility of Stone's interpretation of JFK. So the similarities make sense and there are also differences between all of them that make sense as well.

A overdue reissue in 2011... and still in 2017.

Very apt analysis. I lean to the Smallville family theme from SUPERMAN as well but now that Bruce has recognised the JFK like rising chord development in it then I must also agree. It does slightly foreshadow it. Well spotted , Bruce.

I saw Williams conduct The Boston Pops in a suite from this picture and it was the highlight of the concert. Carnegie Hall, perfect acoustics, small hall, and John Williams in person--it could not get any better.

As I started my John Williams CD collection pretty late.... The Cowboys score still represent an important hole in my collection.

Do you know that the 1994 Varèse Sarabande reissue was the second John Williams's Expanded Sets ever released? (The first was the 1993 Star Wars Anthology boxset.)

1994... yes it's becoming increasingly outdated! The album was digitally reissued in 2014... but com'on... we need a remastered new CD, mercy! ;-)

I sure hope Varese is working on THE COWBOYS for a future expanded release. From what I have seen recently at Varese , I have high hopes.
