TDADW/ALL THAT MONEY CAN BUY has long, long, long been a dear favorite of mine, the movie and the score. Herrmann certainly deserved his one Oscar for this picture -- and all the more glory that, like Monsieur Desplat this year, he won despite being nominated for two different films, usually a kiss of death because it divides the votes. (Why he failed to get a nomination for PSYCHO is another matter, and one of the countless boners in Academy history.)

A favorite of mine, too. Hard to believe this seminal score has not been given attention. Since I've been listening to Herrmann's Jane Eyre (1943/4] and his The Ghost and Mrs. Muir I must have his The Devil and Daniel Webster as well. Since there is an isolated track on the blu-ray, you'd think someone would have pressed it to CD by now. I'll bet the tapes survive. As far as I know, THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER is only available on DVD, and has no isolated music track. Do you know something I don't?

As far as the "five-track, twenty-minute" suite, I presume this refers to to concert suite Herrmann prepared, which appears on a Unicorn CD conducted by Herrmann, a Koch CD conducted by James Sedares, and a radio broadcast conducted by Leopold tokowski, available on a limited edition NY Philharmonic CD set.

(Why he failed to get a nomination for PSYCHO is another matter, and one of the countless boners in Academy history.) 1960 was one of the greatest years in the history of film music. The official nominees.... Exodus...the Winner Spartacus...my choice The Alamo...imo Tiomkin's greatest achievement The Magnificent 7...just a little western score by Elmer Bernstein and Elmer Gantry... I would replace the Previn score with Psycho but of all the scores of 1960 which are the ones you prefer? They are all great. After all these years of the Academy making errors in judgment I say why bother. Just go with your instincts...

Joe and Jim, this score is my number one "Holy Grail." Any chance of me getting / begging for / groveling for / trading for a copy of whatever you have. I'll fly out and shovel snow from your sidewalk and driveway, if it'll help! Ron Burbella BurbellaRon@cs.com

Paul, thanks for reminding me of that embarrassment of riches. I, too, would have switched ELMER GANTRY, splendid as it is, for PSYCHO. And I, too, would have voted for SPARTACUS.
