The Leo Shuken-Jack Hayes orchestrations do a lot for this score.

Are you suggesting that Newman did not indicate his own instrumentation when instructing his assistants? That may be the case. At least in his busy studio days, Newman was part of a factory system and doubtless left a lot of work to associates. I mention this now because I remember how Page Cook (Newman's number one admirer) complained about this very score, saying that Shuken-Hayes's work was less effective than that of Edward Powell in earlier years. I reminded him then he was unintentionally disparaging Newman's own work by suggesting that his effectiveness was dependent on the skill of his assistants.

I mean no disparagement of Newman. I'm merely suggesting, as possibly Cook was, that orchestrators with the experience of Shuken-Hayes (or Powell) are unlikely to be engaged as mere copyists, and are likely to work with the composer in suggesting ideas for effective orchestrations. If that's true, then one might expect that working with different orchestrators would impart different nuances to the score. Whether one likes those nuances is, of course, a matter of taste. Apparently Cook found them wanting, at least when compared to what he perceived to be Edward Powell's earlier influences. As for me, while I make no comparison with Powell, I find the final product of Newman-Shuken-Hayes to my immense liking.

This is really interesting. Wonder if it could apply to other well-known composer/orchestrator combinations...

While it will be nice to hear the original soundtrack recording, the fact that it is mono may result in my returning to the stereo Dot Records re-recording sooner than I may have anticipated.

Know what would be cool? If the Dot LP albums of both Nevada Smith and Raksin’s Will Penny were paired together by Intrada on a premiere CD release!

That said mono doesn’t bother me and I’m happy to get the original film recording which has more music and a larger orchestra. smile

This thread has been around for more than 8 years.
During all this time that members have been clamoring for NEVADA SMITH, not one person involved in the production of La-La Land's 4-CD set of Paramount's westerns offered us any indications that the studio session tapes do exist - but exist in monaural sound.

I'm unsure why such vintage material as recordings over 50 years old require secrecy - as if these are some sort of "hot" properties eagerly anticipated by a large populace.

FSM's "WagnerAlmighty" (a very adamant admirer of music by Alfred Newman) would no doubt be thrilled by this Nevada Smith collection - but she came-to & went-from this Board in a shorter time than the span of this thread!

Yavar, are you still in contact with WA & will you let her know of this good news? smile

ther is the old DOT LP which is a not very good rerecording and far from complete.

I don't think the re-recording is any worse than many of the other 1960s-era re-recordings that we have from United Artists and other labels.

Does anyone know if Raksin's WILL PENNY is complete on this collection? Looking at the track times it runs about 35 mins, so it could be, but I only have a vague recollection - apart from the Main Titles, and the End Titles song ("Don't know too much but one thing I'm sure of, a man ain't nothin' more than a maaaaan...") - of the amount of score in the film.

I'd never buy a collection like this for one score only, but it's going on my Xmas list along with the disastrous John Williams box.

Too bad Paul Dunlap didn't live to be 100 -- he would have greatly enjoyed knowing music from one of his scores (WALK LIKE A DRAGON) was being released...

I have viewed the film again on DVD in the meantime and would say that there are about 40 minutes of music in it, but not much more. It is certainly not wall-to-wall scoring as there are sometimes longer passages without any music at all, although the last 7 minutes are continuously scored in the film (that´s track 12 on the CD). Going by the track listing and track times of the CD set it could be that maybe 5-6 minutes may be missing. But I assume that at least 80-90% of the original score will be there.

Gee, I must say I sort of regret reviving this old thread, because I may have lessened the possibility of someone on the board giving the La La Land Western set a thread of it's own. It certainly deserves one...

Thanks Stefan. If these scores could all be sold separately, WILL PENNY would probably be the one I'd be initially most interested in, so much so that I might consider buying it.

Oh, there's a new thread. Seeya there!
