Couldn't read someone's "correction" of my observation above, as it seemed to refer to posted images, none of which came up on my computer....
Interestingly, I once had that paperback edition of "The City and the Pillar," and eagerly read it, back in my (very closeted) early 1960's, only to discover that Vidal later "revised" it, so that there are versions floating around with different endings. Spoiler alert: in the original, the protagonist kills his former buddy, while in the revision, he just rapes him, somewhat willingly, or so it appears... Both versions are set up as a flashback, with the protagonist drowning his sorrows in a bar. Fascinatingly, the earlier version tends to reinforce the trend at the time that being gay was little short of being psychopathic....

I think his stuff is probably beyond the pale for the inhabitants of that stunted world of faux-patriotic cartoon conformity and dollar worship.
