Giovanni Falcone, l'uomo che sfido Cosa Nostra (2006)
CD RAI Trade FRT 417

This Mafia score for TV appears to be less dark and more melodic as expected, and the CD is indeed able to be enjoyed by many people. It opens with 2 very succeeded love themes. Francesca e Giovanni, superimposing two melodic lines, is surely better than those in Il cuore nel pozzo even if it is matter of taste. For a love theme we have the chance to have a more elaborated piece than those from La piovra 2, which were poor comparing to the action/violence themes. The orchestration is rich : strings section, English horn (?) and sax solo, and then piano... , this first version is the best one.
La madre with his different strings sections has a special and delicate treatment.
Pietas, the most new piece has a motive or a scansion derived from La sindrome di Stendhal on piano on strings background, and a flute plays his other line, excellent. Another version is present with strings, and some piano's interventions.
The other side of the music is the action music, a pure Mafia'style ! Those who love it will not be disappointed !! All the ingredients are present here and 3 tracks are true highlights :
- Violenza nella città : a very rhythmical of 5 min. long piece, reprising the idea of Intrighi politici from Musashi encore, a surprising Mafia'style track, but with more powerness and tension. The middle part is a solemm rendition of the "authoritative" motive very present in the soundtrack derived from the basic melody of Pietas, put also elsewhere in the 2 following other tracks.
- Irruzione notturna : again a well rhythmical theme, in which we found the flavour of the violent tracks Elmetti di fuoco from Canone inverso, and the authoritative theme is treated in a more dynamic way while it comes again. With his changing melodic lines and rhythms, this varied piece might be the richest one of the whole soundtrack.
- L'indigato e i complici : several strong rhythms for this breathless and rapid run. We recognise a little an idea from Vite strozzate (the beginning from Morte di un anticario) but very differently treated. The authoritative theme's part, shorter, is more rapid.
In all of these, we find the Piovra's style summarized, but with more rhythm and dynamism ! As it is enriched by the later works like In the line of fire, La scorta, ...
In Infiltrati is found the “authoritative motive”, increasing in tension and rhythm. Derived from La morale dell'immorale's bridge from La piovra 2, it is a pure synthesiser and percussion Mafia theme ! We can regret that this track would not be separated from the other part.
I let you discover the other tracks, like Il giudice Borsellino. The other pieces are more atmospheric and less melodic. La polizia is a curious track : a Police' siren, taking the 3 notes motive from Svegliati e uccidi and used elsewhere repeated on one minute, and after, transformed in a conclusion motive, for the Falcone and his wife's deaths.
A great music among the best Mafia’s one, this CD is a very nice present. Because of the bad music's rendition in the movie, featuring only short excerpts, apart from the Francesca and Giovanni's theme.
