That's a nice set. Is "War" a similar arrangement to what's on the OST? Is "Charging Fort Wagner" the original version or the film version? Anyway. I have most of these, but I may cherry-pick a few for individual download depending on how the recording sounds.

Yes!

The Fort Wagner cue is from previous Silva albums.

If you don't have some of these, it's a fine set.
These Silva Screen compilations are sometimes hit and miss. They're better than they used to be. The tempos vary quite a bit, especially in the older albums. I would think, "What the hell does the orchestra think its performing." On the newer recordings though they seemed to have solved the problems.

Although I welcome all new film music compilations , its just another Silva Screen ' repackaged' compilation ...

I already have many of the titles there, but looks like a great set!

Wasn't there an earlier James Horner compilation from Silva? Perhaps more than one? I do seem to remember one with the TITANIC tie-in years ago.

and takes us all the way back to the very beginning - Battle Beyond The Stars (1980).

Strangely, Battle Beyond the Stars isn't listed. Was the track list cut off?

War from Avatar is an excellent performance, it's on the Film09 collection ( or was it Film'10?) and it rocks the house, plus an excellent crisp recording.

Although I have already all the original tracks in their complete form (The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas excluded) this and Barry's Walkabout will be mine soon, very soon.

Beautiful cover indeed (from Silvestri's Abyss? smile).

It does seem to be missing the last track in the tracklist at the top of this FSM thread, yes. Based on http://www.europadisc.co.uk/item/95903 , "Battle Beyond The Stars" is track 13 on disc 2.

Looks like a lossless track from "The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas" at last, for those who care about that sort of thing. Seems like a nice compilation overall, though I do wish they'd recorded some things that haven't seen an official release, like "Wolfen."

Looking at the track titles, I think it's a little too heavy on the action material. Like choosing "War" from AVATAR, for example, which may be the least exciting track on the whole soundtrack.

Just what I thought. Horner has written so much calm and nice music for piano, synths and small ensembles through the years, so it's a pity so little of it is featured here.

Lots of the ethnic/ethereal stuff on AVATAR too, although I suspect it would be more difficult to create for the Prague orchestra (with all the oddball synth effects and such).

Silva Screen ususally hires synth players like Mark Ayres if they are in need of an electronic re-creation. But of course, it would have been better with the original version.

Well, I'm definitely interested in hearing the Land Before Time re-recording! One of my all-time favorite scores... although I hardly ever listen to it because it makes me weep every time.

Check out this blog post from the graphic designer who worked on this Horner set. While we may have to weather some substandard performances, visually I think this set looks nice and at least ups the visual design ante from some of Silva's prior compilations - nice nod to "Avatar" without being overly so, good color palette, and fairly simple and clean:
