Hi There!
Now that I have finished watching all available COLUMBO episodes on DVD, I jumped to THE ROCKFORD FILES.
And here too I love the musical scores. Since Jim Rockford is a modern-day-cowboy-type-of- P.I., the title theme and a vast majority of the episode's scores feature very prominently the harmonica and have a distinct "country" feel to it. Combined with some 70`s ryhthm and instrumentations.

Some of the episodes feature some rather long passages of Rockford driving in his gold Pontiac Firebird Esprit or walking on the beach, etc. the music gets some great moments to set a feeling or atmosphere.

I love the use of the harmonica in film scores (THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS, DANCES WITH WOLVES, etc.).
And in THE ROCKFORD FILES it plays a vital part.

It wasn't easy finding one of these T.V. Themes compilation which features the original version of the Mike Post/Pete Carpenter theme. "Television's Greatest Hits, Vol. 3: 70's & 80's" contains it.

Now I wonder, if there are any other fans of Rockford's music here on the board. Are there any releases out there of some of the serie's scores?
I'd really love to have them on CD.

I don't have that CD here right now, but I'm not sure it does. I'm not too familiar with the original theme though! But there's a German TV compilation that I think has the original theme: "TV Hits".

CindyLover will undoubtedly come to the rescue on this one.

This version sounds pretty authentic to me. It's a real harmonica. Some re-recorded versions feature a synth harmonica.
THW WALTONS' theme on this CD you mention seems to be the original too.
Thanks for sharing !!!

You're welcome! If I'm correct, I think the one on the TVT Vol 3 compilation is a rerecording (at least it's a bunch slower than the one on TV Hits).

The Waltons is not original though, while I don't have that particular Goldsmith CD, I think it's taken from the TV themes suite of that Goldsmith-conducted compilation.

Info inside the German TV Hits CD:

Boy, do I hope for a Rockford Files box set. There is a lot of absolutely fantastic music in the show. And it`s really a unique orchestra: bluesy harmonica, bluegrass dobro, funky 70s electric guitar and more.

And then this wonderful and catchy Mike Post theme.

What`s really great about the scores is the fact that many of the longer cues play without dialogue when James Garner was driving around. So it wasn`t scored as subdued underscoring but was really present.

Now only one of the labels has to be as excited about the music as I am smile

I've been re-watching The Rockford Files again lately--as I tend to do--and there's always great music to be heard. The season two episode, "Gearjammers" has a dangerously catchy cue for Joseph "Rocky" Rockford at the episode's opening that fits the character perfectly. I often find myself humming Mike Post's cues long after the scenes they're used in have ended.

One of the most infuriating things about TV music is the lack of CD releases of Mike Post's music.

Co-composer Pete Carpenter had a lot to do with the quality of the music on this show. Another unsung hero.

Imagine if there was a Mike Post/Star Wars connection?

Absolutely. I wonder just how the Post-Carpenter team worked out all those cues on so many TV shows of the '70s and '80s. As omnipresent as their work was during those years only makes their relative obscurity all the more puzzling to me.

What a surprise. This is a board that deals with film and TV music. But you are right, it`s really weird that the music of one of the most active and succesful composers in the history of american television gets mentioned on a film and TV music board every once in awhile.

Is The Rockford Files the only tv show where the harmonica is often the lead instrument? It seems like a lot of cues feature it--and features it well. Normally I can take it or leave it alone, but in the hands (and mouth) of whoever's playing it (Mke Post himself?) for Rockford did a hell of a job.

Love these scores and the show is of course among the best ever P.I. shows ever...now sell us the friggin' CDs of the scores, please. smile

Ordered! wink

That said, and speaking of the harmonica as it relates to James Garner's performances I bring you this.

Perhaps one day we'll also get a CD of David Shire's complete theatrical quality score to the miniseries "Streets of Laredo". James Garner was a REAL movie star who not only made the successful transition back to television as the beloved Jim Rockford but as Woodrow Call as well.

It's been so long that I can't comment on the scores for the series.

I did, however, last year year watch all the TV movies. Tehre was some nice scoring here and there. But unfortunately only one of the TV movies was good, another okay, and the rest just not any good. Further more, nothing is tied up or at least left someplace where we could say good-bye. Hell, Angel's last appearance ever -- hiding under Rockford's deck, having stole his mail, and Jim spraying the waterhose under there.

I did note, however, even though Peter Carpenter had passed away, his was still credited with all the TV movie scores with Post. I suspect Post had something to do with that.

Mike Post's The Rockford Files theme sounds a bit like Billy Preston's hit "Space race", doesn't it?

There are indeed some similarities. Great funky stuff. Although the Billy Preston title doesn`t have the bluegrass and country elements that are apparent in the Mike Post scores.

JimP, I think you've got your answer right there as to why there's so little enthusiasm around these parts for this score. Thanks for the topic though, you lot. Inspired me this weekend to watch a few first season episodes (probably rewatch, as I was there from the beginning, but not any shows I remembered). Nice break from all the Star Wars hooplasmile

I haven't seen the Rockford Files since the 80's. So I don't recall the music at all. I really like the flow of music on the YT video. Good stuff. Thxs for posting.
