Those who were planning on getting this new DVD release, I have a firm bit of advice. If you value quality control in a DVD release, you will not waste your money on this.

There are a number of episodes in this set where large sections have suffered from deterioration of the sound elements to the point where the dialogue is totally muffled to the point of not being able to be heard at all, even as sound FX are normal and too loud. The episode "Deadly Ringer", Pt. 1 has been singled out for the worst of this problem in the first nine minutes but the problem apparently has happened elsewhere. I just heard the "Deadly Ringer" episode and I was stunned that it could be as bad as it is. Try to envision a muffled faraway voice with your fingers in your ears distorting the effect, because that's how bad it is.

Universal insists this was the best they had, but that's garbage because their R2 releases have no problems with the audio and if they had a case of the original masters deteriorated they could have used the PAL transfers and speed adjusted them properly to get the right audio for these episodes or even borrowed from syndicated prints where necessary. This should be a warning that sometimes when your master elements are not in good shape to give the best results, then you OWE it to the consumer to look to other elements, even secondary ones that can be an improvement in spots where necessary.

I figured I would wait on this after I've gotten the 6MDM set, which will be sometime in the future as I'm still unemployed, but this is pathetic news. Way to lower the bar Universal. Thanks for the heads up!

The Bionic Woman - Universal Statement Regarding Season 2 Audio Problem
Studio provides statement

We've had a number of readers report poor audio with "Deadly Ringer, Part 1" on the recently-released season 2 set, and they provided us with the following statement after looking into the issue:
Every episode in the Bionic Woman Season 2 DVD release has been digitally re-mastered for optimal viewing. However, the remastering cannot correct flaws that either were part of the original presentation or that happened over the passage of time. Certain moments within select episodes from Season 2 may include noticeable moments of imperfect picture or audio. This is reflective of the source material which unfortunately, is the best source material that is available to the studio and cannot be corrected. The episodes are still included in the set to provide as complete a collection as possible.

Consumers not satisfied with their purchase can contact Universal Studios Home Entertainment Consumer Relations by email at USHE.ConsumerRelations@bydeluxe.com or by phone at 888-882-5779, for information on returning the DVD set in exchange for a $30 NBC Universal Store voucher, valid for the purchase of any merchandise at http://www.nbcuniversalstore.com.
Universal will also be noting the problem on future batches of sets that go to retail.

I.E.-We are not going to do anything about the audio issue. Too bad. This set was on my radar. I really enjoyed the season 1 set.

Also... one last bit of follow-up regarding the Bionic Woman: Season 2 DVD: A number of fans have been unsatisfied regarding Universal's comment from last week about the DVD audio defects on 2 episodes from the set. Universal essentially said that the defects are in the source material, and that's the best they can do. Many fans have pointed out, however, that the episodes have been released internationally on DVD in the past without the audio defects. So we went back to the studio again on this, and their response is essentially that those international DVDs were released back in 2006 and "the source material used for that release was not available to us." They weren't specific as to why this is, so one can only speculate. But - and take this with a healthy dose of salt, as it's JUST our speculation - does anyone remember the fire at Universal back in 2008 that destroyed a big portion of the studio lot's on-site film archive and tape vault? An educated guess would be that some of these assets may have been "adversely impacted" by the incident. Anyway, just a guess. I know that even this follow-up info probably won't be satisfying to many of you, but there it is.

I'd be more than happy to lend Universal my Region 2 DVDs for them to take the audio from. They can correct the speed and pitch difference and replace the audio.

Exactly. I honestly don't see why they can't do that.

I'm going to buy it for one reason (even though I have the Region 2 set):
and that's because I fear season 3 won't get released if not enough people
purchase season 2. I wouldn't bother if season 3 had been released on Region 2.

All right, we've got a bit of good news for fans of Universal's Bionic Woman, who purchased the recent Season Two DVD set. Universal has apparently been able to locate improved audio elements for the episode The Deadly Ringer, Part 1 (which had significant audio problems in the existing DVD set) and is creating a "fixed" Disc 4 with better sound quality. They've sent me the following statement this afternoon, with instructions on how you can get a copy of the fixed disc:

"The initial release of Bionic Woman Season 2 was issued with the best audio elements that the studio had available at the time, which included noticeably imperfect audio from the episode, Deadly Ringer. Constructive feedback and suggestions since provided from fans has led to the uncovering of additional source material to improve the audio on this specific episode.

Consumers not satisfied with their purchase can contact Universal Studios Home Entertainment Consumer Relations by email at USHE.ConsumerRelations@bydeluxe.com or by phone at 888-882-5779 for information on returning Disc 4 which featured the episode, Deadly Ringer, in exchange for a replacement disc with corrected audio."

Glad to see they've worked to address this issue after all. Note that Universal hasn't been able to locate better elements to address a similar audio issue on the episode The Return of Bigfoot: Part 2 (in the same DVD set), but at least this is a step in the right direction. We certainly give them credit for trying to make it right. If any of you have the DVD set and want the fixed disc (and who among you wouldn't?)... there you go.

Apparently they prefer you to go the e-mail route. When I dialed the number I got a recording saying I had to leave my phone number for them to call back within 24 hours which I had no desire to do so I'll see how long it takes with an e-mail request.

Good that Universal addressed the issue, though from what I've heard this was simply the worst episode in the lot among a series that had some kind of audio problems.

What if you haven't got around yet to buying the season 2 set?
What then? I may not get this for a year or two. Are they going to
replace the disc then?

Good question. Will they re-package all sets not already sold?

Have the audio issues on The Bionic Woman S2 episodes been resolved? I know Universal offered a replacement disc program in 2011 but I am wondering if subsequent pressings of TBW S2 have the corrected audio.

Not that anyone has any interest in this topic anymore-- but apparently the answer is "No" and we're talking nearly four years later. The S2 set I received from Amazon does indeed include the muffled audio version of "Deadly Ringers" (oh joy). The email provided above no longer works (oh joy, part II).

Eric, did you receive a replacement disc?

I remember trying the e-mail contact and never hearing back from them at the time. I honestly don't know if they ever replaced them in later pressings but I doubt it because I don't think there ever were later pressings. I just decided it was one of those things I could write off since its not a priority thing with me like the problems with Fugitive and Batman. But it was a botched job in not being convenient to handle the replacement deal contact.
