I watched this today, and it was splendid.
I was wondering (and getting a bit annoyed, I must admit) when the introduction by Robert Townson and Ana Yanes would be part of the entire concert, but thankfully, all that ended about ten minutes in. Robert's intro was actually expertly written, both by a friend and a fan of the man's work, but the constant translating, while necessary for the audience, got a bit on my nerves.
Then the concert itself. It was fantastic. A few pieces I didn't even know, like The Sum of All Fears, and The Swarm; Pieces I didn't know that well, Star Trek: First Contact and Planet of the Apes; and the ones I know and love, Gremlins, The Omen and The Final Conflict. The only negative thing I can think of is that the pacing was off for some pieces of the Gremlins suite, and the Omen suite, but since you should never expect a carbon copy of the original recording, that's totally understandable. It did seem like Diego Navarro had a little bit too much fun conducting The Omen, and The Final Conflict, but I can't blame him big grin.

I do have to ask if some people in the audience actually liked it. Yeah, there was a lot of applause, and a few standing ovations, but some folks looked bored out of their minds. I'd assume they knew what to expect.

In any case, a great DVD, and I hope more of these will follow.

Having a scan through the Fimucite websites, Varese is listed as a collaborator for both Fimucite 4 and Fimucite 5, and it did say somewhere that they were again involved in the closing night gala for Fimucite 4 so it seems reasonable to assume they may be for 5 as well.

I hope this means the closing night galas for 4 and 5 will be future Varese Club DVD releases!

Agreed, I would gladly buy those as DVD's, particularly the Williams one.

me too. especially barry and Williams

Just got mine in today, played the dvd and jumped right to THE FINAL CONFLICT. What an outstanding performance! I was really surprised it sounded this good. I've always wanted to hear this live and i guess this is as close as i'll get. Wish i'd got to see the concert. What a great program.Watched SUM OF ALL FEARS and THE OMEN parts and was again blown away. Need to see the whole thing properly now. Yes its a shame it wasn't on Blu-Ray or 5.1 sound but, apart from these minor niggles, what a great release. Thanks Varese!

My DVD has been in one of the DVD players since it arrived. I have listened to it all the way through at least twice. Kudos to Mark Snow for filling in for Joel McNeeley on short notice.

Got mine too. I wouldn't have let this pass even with some of the inadequacies of the presentation. It was obviously a labor of love for Townsen who has obvious love and admiration for Goldsmith. The highlight for me was the Planet of The Apes selections. It was interesting to note the orchestra players involvement... none of that apparent indifference I've seen in other film music performances. But all too often the orchestra did seem to get sloppy (particularly the french horn section). I would have preferred more precision from the players. Mark Snow's reading of some of the pieces was just a bit lethargic and loose. The orchestra was a lot snappier and lively under Diego Navarro. But still, to have a live concert of these pieces is a treasure. For me it is somewhat bittersweet to watch this though. Sweet that Goldsmith's life in music is being celebrated in this way and bitter because that life is over.

Received my copy yesterday having just got back from The John Barry memorial concert on Monday evening and watched this last night.
A beautiful release, particulary enjoyed 'Sum Of All Fears' , 'The Omen' and 'The Final Conflict'.
It was all good though, lets have some more concerts released please !!

Watched the DVD last night. Haven't listened to the CD yet.

Enjoyed the DVD. The highlights were the Omen scores, especially the suite from the first film. I wonder if this was Diego Navarro taking over the conducting. He certainly looked suitably possessed.

Good to hear some cues in the concert, not just main themes.

The speech before the music was a little too long in two languages.

Just finished watching it. The performance of The Gremlins Rag makes it worth the purchase alone, but it's a great concert all the way.

The speech before the music was a little too long in two languages.

That's really my only complaint. With multiple cameras, it EASY to seamlessly cut out with second language, but I guess it's preserving the experience of seeing it in Tenerife.

At least it's skippable, and I was already glad that they didn't do these type of introductions before any of the pieces.
