http://www.nytimes.com/1993/11/09/news/the-secret-of-long-life-be-dour-and-dependable.html "We don't really know why conscientious people live longer -- it's not as simple as wearing your sweater when it's cold outside," said Dr. Howard S. Friedman, a psychologist at the University of California at Riverside who did the research. "And despite assertions that optimism and a sense of humor are healthy, we found no evidence for this claim. Cheerfulness predicted a shorter life, perhaps because it indicated an unrealistic optimism, which led people to ignore risks to their health."

Quit eating for fun. Eating has become a social event rather than a physical necessity. People's lives are so emotionally bankrupt, they choose to eat themselves to death. We need to abolish the processed foods and indulge in healthier, living alternatives: fruits and vegetables; these are precisely what our bodies were made for.

I don't think a survey of just over 1,000 people is big enough. And you need to remember that they looked at these people over a period since the 1920s. The whole world changed in that time. What might be preservative then might not be now. I think it'd be more to do with 'conscientious' people keeping their minds and analytical skills sharp, and maybe being disciplined bodily. 'Holding onto themselves'. It's chaos and 'going with the flow' that tends to fall down towards entropy. I'd say that in the 1920s they probably would have tested adjective traits like 'conscientiousness' because that was in the analytical education system. How many school reports probably had, 'Johnny is a conscientious student' in those days? Nowadays, the same questionnaire might have quite different variables. Would it mean anything? I dunno.

Moderation in nearly everything you do, perhaps, that way if you make a mistake you can't cause a fatal event by overdoing it.

You know what's REALLY sad? It's CHEAPER to eat CRAP than it is to eat HEALTHY food! I can't afford to buy fruit and veggies anymore, so I have to subsist on crap like Macaroni and Cheese, and TV dinners. Mind you, it might be crap, but it's DELICIOUS crap!

Stop buying so many CDs and movies if you can't afford good food. Stop expecting the government to make decisions for you. Learn about your body, nutrition, your health, what is right, what is wrong, and act accordingly. Don't let people/life get to you. “If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster/ And treat those two impostors just the same.” Rudyard Kipling Stop bitching so much. Walk more. I can't tell you how my life improved when I started taking walks. Turn off the fickin TV. It sucks so much out of your life. Find the thing you can DO (as opposed to stuff you like watching/listening to/reading) using your abilities. Do that thing. A lot. Keep a journal. Drink lots of water. None of these things is radical, like taking on a new exercise routine involving weights and such. You can expand into those areas once you get going on these simple things anyone can do without waiting. You will live longer, and want to, if you reduce the frustration and anger in your life by not fixating on things that you feel comfortable fixating on, like online arguments. Of course I don't do all these things, what are you nuts? I'm onlly human. But I try. This one, saved for last because it's easy: Listen to music. Seriously, whenever I am grouchy, I stop and realize I haven't listened to music in hours or even days. I put music on and it helps lift my spirits. As much as I love dark stuff, if I'm in a bad mood I stay away from it.
