http://www.csmonitor.com/The-Culture/Culture-Cafe/2011/0621/Danny-Elfman-in-talks-to-score-The-Hunger-Games I’m wondering if anyone else on this board has read The Hunger Games trilogy written by Suzanne Collins? You’ll hear a lot about the books as Hollywood is going to make all three movies, and Danny Elfman seems to be the choice to score the movies. My daughters asked me to read this trilogy, and I wasn’t going to as they also talked me in to reading The Twilight series, which I didn’t care for at all. However, The Hunger Games novels are absolutely addictive. When you hit “The Games,” you can’t put it down. Also, I found the books very violent and wondered why a “Young Adult” label was attached. I felt like I was reading adult novels. The books take place in a post-apocalyptic America where only 13 districts exist. (Yep, definitely a reference to our original 13 colonies.) Katniss, the main character, is definitely a worthy successor to Ripley. The writing is very visual. My only complaint is the redundancy of the first person narrator always blaming herself. Otherwise, the world is visually painted, and the action is non-stop. The movie has many good actors, but I’m hearing rumors that Hollywood may make four movies, instead of three, following in the Twilight footsteps. There is no need for that decision. Each book would make a great movie. Let’s hope Hollywood doesn’t blow it as there are a lot of followers of these novels. Want exciting, fast reads? Read The Hunger Games followed by Catching Fire and The Mockingjays. I think Elfman is a good choice for these movies. He’ll be composing lots of action music. Also, I’m hoping he’ll give each of the three main characters a specific theme. The books also call for him to compose heartbreak and sadness, drama, songs, and heroism. I’m excited to hear what he does with such interesting narratives.

To those on the fence thinking this is another POP novel like TWILIGHT, think again. It was damn good and a very fast read and like almost all, I was surprised that this was a young adult novel. It had some good themes and was very addictive. Highly recommended. As for the two composers choose for the scoring, I can't say I am too crazy about either of them as part of me wanted someone who could use this score as a calling card [Bear M or Christopher Drake] or an established hand like Bruce B to jump back into things. Christopher Young or John Murphy would have been my choices. Still, I will watch with an open mind and ear!

I really hope that the "collaboration" they mention is just PR smoke--let Elfman write the score he wants to write, and let T-Bone needledrop the songs he wants to needledrop. That's my only real fear for the music, that studio interference will lead to it being a patchwork or worse. I guess Elfman will do the score, and may also collaborate with T-Bone on source music and a song or two, with T-Bone dealing with the rest of the songs "inspired by" the film.
