http://www.csmonitor.com/The-Culture/Culture-Cafe/2011/0621/Danny-Elfman-in-talks-to-score-The-Hunger-Games

I’m wondering if anyone else on this board has read The Hunger Games trilogy written by Suzanne Collins? You’ll hear a lot about the books as Hollywood is going to make all three movies, and Danny Elfman seems to be the choice to score the movies.

My daughters asked me to read this trilogy, and I wasn’t going to as they also talked me in to reading The Twilight series, which I didn’t care for at all. However, The Hunger Games novels are absolutely addictive. When you hit “The Games,” you can’t put it down. Also, I found the books very violent and wondered why a “Young Adult” label was attached. I felt like I was reading adult novels. The books take place in a post-apocalyptic America where only 13 districts exist. (Yep, definitely a reference to our original 13 colonies.) Katniss, the main character, is definitely a worthy successor to Ripley. The writing is very visual. My only complaint is the redundancy of the first person narrator always blaming herself. Otherwise, the world is visually painted, and the action is non-stop.

The movie has many good actors, but I’m hearing rumors that Hollywood may make four movies, instead of three, following in the Twilight footsteps. There is no need for that decision. Each book would make a great movie. Let’s hope Hollywood doesn’t blow it as there are a lot of followers of these novels. Want exciting, fast reads? Read The Hunger Games followed by Catching Fire and The Mockingjays.

I think Elfman is a good choice for these movies. He’ll be composing lots of action music. Also, I’m hoping he’ll give each of the three main characters a specific theme. The books also call for him to compose heartbreak and sadness, drama, songs, and heroism. I’m excited to hear what he does with such interesting narratives.

I hear there have been complaints about Jennifer Lawrence being darkened-up to play Katniss. While I'm glad they didn't give yet another role that could have been played by an American to a Brit (and I'm speaking as a Brit myself), I'm sure there must be some duskier actresses in Hollywood...

Every good composer - and (insert unfavourite composer here) - deserves a trilogy of his/her own, and why shouldn't this be Elfman's? smile

Because he already has Men In Black wink

Isn't the last movie going to be split in two anyway?

Thanks for the info, Joan.

I was not previously familiar with the novels, but I absolutely ADORE post-apocalyptic films, and am delighted to see one of my favourite composers attached to one. If they make it into a trilogy, all the better!!

Lawrence is a little too old for Katniss who was 17 in the novel, but Lawrence is a good actress. Hailee Steinfeld from True Grit and a few others were considered for the role.

I too am hearing that the last book maybe be split into two movies, which is too bad. That's just Hollywood trying to make more bucks.

My Missus is a voracious reader. At any given time she has dozens of library books scattered about. A couple of years ago I grabbed "The Hunger Games" out of the pile at random and I couldn't put it down. I found it an extremely compelling story, very well told. I hope the movie is as compelling.

On a related note, not too long after that and, again, at random, I pulled out Neal Shusterman's "Unwind". Like "The Hunger Games", a Young Adult novel. HOLY COW what a book! Great stuff. I hope somebody has the smarts to get THIS made into a movie... even if only to expose it to MORE people.

Are the books any good, or are they Twilight "romantic" bullshit? The basic plot description puts me in mind of Battle Royale and Stephen King's The Long Walk, both of which I enjoyed a great deal.

They are good. There is some angst and romance, but they're really about the effect of war and trauma on young people. They're very fast reads, sometimes unexpectedly powerful, and very readable. Nothing like Twilight.

Thanks, Mastadge. I agree with you. This trilogy is nothing like the Twilight series.

I found The Hunger Games to be a fascinating read. But I was surprised by all the graphic violence and disturbing themes considering it's categorized as juvenile fiction. It'll be interesting to see how it translates to the big screen; and a score by Danny Elfman makes it even more enticing. He certainly has the ability to find the humanity in this story's inhumane situations. And I'm really curious to hear how he'd score an oppressive government's reality TV taken to violent extremes. At least the story offers up opportunites for some exciting scoring sequences that can't easily be covered by pop songs.

I probably should read the next two books. But it took me days to shake the images of the first one.

On a personal note: I had to stop reading when Katniss was sent the bread from District 11 because that part really choked me up.

Hopefully it'll be more Elfman, because... and I know this is blasphemous to a lot of people... I loathe the kind of stuff Burnett does.

To those on the fence thinking this is another POP novel like TWILIGHT, think again.

It was damn good and a very fast read and like almost all, I was surprised that this was a young adult novel.

It had some good themes and was very addictive. Highly recommended.

As for the two composers choose for the scoring, I can't say I am too crazy about either of them as part of me wanted someone who could use this score as a calling card [Bear M or Christopher Drake] or an established hand like Bruce B to jump back into things.

Christopher Young or John Murphy would have been my choices.

Still, I will watch with an open mind and ear!

I just started the second book. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book.

The trailer has me worried however. The production design seems way too derivative of previous depictions of dystopian futures. I'm not buying Woody Harrelson as Haymitch. And I'm worried that this is being made by Lionsgate. They make terrible movies.

Yes, but with a high-profile movie and potential trilogy like this (not guaranteed - for every Twilight there are several Eragons) Lionsgate would want a name composer attached... and with the best will in the world, Bear McCreary and Bruce Broughton are less recognisable to the average punter (or even the average journalist) than Danny Elfman and T-Bone Burnett.

I really hope that the "collaboration" they mention is just PR smoke--let Elfman write the score he wants to write, and let T-Bone needledrop the songs he wants to needledrop. That's my only real fear for the music, that studio interference will lead to it being a patchwork or worse.

I guess Elfman will do the score, and may also collaborate with T-Bone on source music and a song or two, with T-Bone dealing with the rest of the songs "inspired by" the film.

I *think* Gary Ross said that T Bone was also scoring with Danny.

I imagine T Bone will be doing the District 12 stuff and Elfman will score the Games.

I don't know how much stock to put in this, but I am hearing rumblings that James Newton Howard is taking over. T-Bone Burnett will likely remain on board as well.

Don't quote me on this (unless I am right wink)
