I was told by a good friend of mine, "Jay! You have to watch Game of Thrones! You're going to love it! It's like The Wire meets Middle Earth!"

I do love the show. I mean, it's awesome! And of course being a film music nerd I had some immediate thoughts on the music.

(I still have ep.9 and 10 left so don't spoil anything for me!)

My first impressions of the music to Game of Thrones was poor, or at least lacking in quality compared to the show. I thought it was underplayed, and even the sonic quality was too muffled and digital sounding, where you think in this genre a composer could exploit the full use of an orchestra. I kept thinking, "Wow, if this show is as good as I think it is, how come it's not doing anything musically? Like the way 'LOST' had SO much musical character."

After watching and re-watching some episodes, I realize the the underscore to the show is amazing. While there were probably other directions to take the music in, I believe they went with the whole soap opera, meditation-like sustains for tension and scene changes that work very well. It lets the story be told with much clarity. And the way the music will often be sustaining that tension in an eerie way even when the screen goes black and the credits roll, and it just continues swimming in the last emotion. It's very nicely done.

I had a thought, do you think they should have hired someone else to compose a grandiose theme song for the opening credits? As much as I can give it up to the music and the purpose it serves as under-scoring, I can't hear anything but a half-assed half-cocked opening theme song. I'm so excited when it kicks in, but I feel like they could have done something bigger, and better. Something that sticks with you! A better motif! I like it and everything, but I can't help but wonder....

I'm digging this thread up as there seems to be no one stop post to discuss the music of GOT. First in my IMO I think GOT was a missed opportunity. When I read the books, I used to listen to John Barry's Lion in Winter/The Last Valley and Klaus Badelt's The Time Machine. For me, this playlist worked really well with Martin's writhing. So when the the series was commissioned, I was hoping that the music would touch on these works as well as drawing on the music idioms of the 1400's, the books are inspired by the Wars of the Roses, and make use of instruments from across the globe from that period thus giving all the kingdoms their own musical identity. I was also hoping for Lord of the Rings style motifs and Lion in Winter choral passages. Hence why I think GOT was a missed opportunity musically. Do people agree with this or do people think the series got the music it deserved? Finally, I note there are a lack of reviews of he music, aside from two reviews in tracksounds and one in MMUK, so what do people think of Djawadi's four scores? Have they improved as the series has gone on or not?

I find one or two cues in each album that I return to, but I guess I'm not invested enough in the show or its music to dig into the intricate thematic development that I'm assured is there.

I love the opening credits, but don't recall anything of note from the actual show.

I certainly agree with many of the points made in the original post.

For a series that's famous for its lavishness - Look at the sets! The costumes! The scenery! The actors! The special effects! - they certainly scrimp on the music, which is bland, and often-very synth sounding.

The original Main Title and the Season Two episode scores, especially the stuff for Arya and Jaqen H'ghar, are the highlights from this series.

Such a missed opportunity, musically. I agree with Julian - it seems that no expense is spared on getting things exactly right in virtually every area of the show - except the music, which is just wallpaper. It could be so much more.

Actually I got infected with the main theme from the show shortly after watching. I don't think a more medieval score would have fitted the series. It's a fantasy world and IMHO should have an own musical identity instead of being too much grounded in too obvious musical associations. That said I think on a compositional level the music is a little hit & miss. I created a personal "Best Of" cd from all four seasons which contains a lot of highlights (e.g. the great "Rains of Castamere" theme and its variations from the second season) and plays very nicely. Not all of the music is worth listening apart from the series but there are quite a few memorable moments, e.g. the great King's Road track from the first season, the beautiful choral writing in "The Children" (Season 4)- I don't like Mr. Djawadis other film scores at all. So I believe GoT is his best effort too date.

PS: If someone should be interested I may post my "best of" tracklist.

A beautiful rendition of the "Rains of Castamere" theme by Tina Guo.

Those you dismiss the show's music because of "a lack of themes" should listen to it. :-)

I guess I'm the opposite of most of these posts. I love practically all of the music from the series. The ending track for S4 ... The Children ... is probably my favorite. In the actual series, it follows immediately upon what is Track 13 of the S4 CD, You are No Son of Mine. I disagree that the theme is not good; in fact, it's really perfect for the series and as someone above pointed out a more sonorous score would not have seemed in character with the series. (Of course, I will admit I am a Ramin Djawadi fan.)

Having just rewatched first season, I think the music works brilliantly! The subtle, moody approach taken is modern, but I don't think in a bad way. Just look at Aryas first 'dancing' lesson which is indeed underscored in 6/8 - but with an odd, eerie edge (the track 'The Pointy End'). Spotting is also done very effectively. There are long stretches without music and when it sneaks in, it heightens so much.

The only theme that really comes into the foreground here is the main theme - perhaps a bit too often. As you probably know though, Djawadi had little time to do that first season. I think the music got richer in the later seasons and worked just as well.

I also thought the title theme a little weak for quite some time. It has grown on me though. Just how a TV theme should IMO.

The them is quite good. Not very complex or versatile, but it's the kind of theme that you hum along without it ever wearing out it's welcome.

The underscore is largely anonymous to me. I've been told there is a plethora of themes, but honestly they don't penetrate my field of attention at all.

The occasional interesting cues notwithstanding the music of GOT is largely like a dinner consisting of boiled potato, boiled chicken with some peas and a white sauce, served in a beige room on a plastic dining room table.

In episode 9 of season 4 I actually found the music detrimental to the episode. Such epic events scored in such a low-rent way.

Oh dear. What happened here? What is the problem with the percussion? This sounds like Yanni elevator music due to the extremely poor percussion recording and general lack of a symphony! This is mostly chamber work. Who produced this abomination?

The only bright spots are the Khalesi cholar bits but these were already fine on the original albums.

The original compositions are not exactly great but, wow! Misjudgment. Bizarelly, Djawadi's very limited compositions actually seem more sophisticated and symphonic than this stuff. Did I get the wrong memo? What happened here?

If I was James Fitzpatrick I would distance myself from this bizarre moment of madness as soon as possible.

Djawadi should not be allowed near these properties, yet he is. He is a good sound designer, he is not a composer. If I was Ramin, I would let real composers do the work and not ruin films on the level he does
