Of all the films he's directed,

we can't come up with a more visually-intriguing Mona Lisa- undercurrent

than this sci-fi opus (whch we first caught during its original Bicentennial 1976 run.

We daresay it's still as fascinatingly enigmatic Now

no less than Then.

If'n you want spoon-fed black and white simplistic galactic 'heroics',

well then - this ain't it, kidthis ain't it.

But if you wanna partake inna fascinating odyssey that's about as atypical for the genre as possible,

by all inquisitive means, cinematically check it out.

Fantastic post, NiftyNeo!

I adore this movie. For everything it is and everything it isn't. Actually, you pretty much said it all better that I could!

Thumbs up.

I know I'm not a movie critic - and hope I won't get stones throwed at me but here's my 2 cents...

I really loved that movie and got the special editon (the box is intentionally sort of crooked) - and it is so 70ish in the way that it is anti-climatic.
If I was asked to choose a look-a-like - I'd say Brazil is it.
In both movies, the main character is devoured by the system.
A lot of people I know saw Brazil as a comedy but, that movie makes me so sad everytime I rewatch it. Seems that sometimes we are living it...

Btw - beautiful pics - makes me want to go watch it now!

awful.
what is frustrating is that it could have been really good.
a film that has numerous scenes that make no sense whatsoever (ping-pong anyone?)
no matter how stylish, will not be successful,
Remake this instead of LOGAN'S RUN!

Except that Logan's Run stinks and needs a remake where perhaps they can fix all the script and other problems.

Man Who Fell to Earth, on the other hand, stands alone as a superior science fiction film. Probably in the top 10 of all-time science fiction films, though a bit too depressing to watch regularly.

I just hope the makers of LOGAN can resist the impulse to cast members of the original in the redo.
It seems de rigeur these days but i really dont want to see Basil Exposition in the new versionsmile

I'm a huge, dedicated fan to Nic Roeg and this film is terrific. However, the Criterion DVD edition includes Walter Tevis' (The Hustler) original novel and I made a mistake of reading it -- this film could suffice from a re-interpretation of the novel by a skilled filmmaker. Of course, Roeg certainly made it his own, but the novel is spades better.

Years before I heard talk that these two were tinkering with Robert Heinleine's sixties sci-fi epic Stranger In A Strange Land. (One of the few sci-fi novels I've read, and actually liked)

.... Walter Tevis' original novel ... is spades better.

that's why i said i would rather see this remade than LOGAN (which I am sure will be another generic action/adventure filmfrown )

Starring Will Smith, no doubt.

The Logan's Run remake is starring Ryan Gosling and is being helmed by fantastic Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson, Valhalla Rising, the upcoming Drive with Gosling). The script is also in the good hands of Alex Garland, who is very keen in the Sci-Fi genre. I hope there will be nothing to worry about with this one except hoping it will be a stylish, sexy, and intelligent Sci-Fi Thriller.

I'd love to see a solid adaptation of Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land -- a favorite novel of mine.

WELL, sc-fi films of recent years have disappointed because they are really action films with sf trappings
I AM LEGEND, I ROBOT , INCEPTION, MINORITY REPORT, TIME MACHINE .....
trying to think of the last real sf film....

WAR OF THE WORLDS was great smile

Jenny Agutter already brought the sexy. You don't get much sexier than her.

YUM!
