I wonder if the "Chant for Dead Pharaoh" could have influenced Stephen Sondheim's mock-mournful music for the Miles Gloriosus episode in A FUNNY THING. Sondheim admired Herrmann, but this music is credited to Newman, whose esthetic was very different from Sondheim's.

Or was that mock dirge written by Ken Thorne? (I know the musical only from the film verwion.)

Just paid eBay $77.95 for The Egyptian (2cd). What a difference a week can make! Sadder but wiser. I didn't heed the writing on the wall (this thread). At least I was able to still order the Blu-ray from SAE for the regular retail of "only" $40.

There are currently new copies for sale on Amazon for $30.00 -- just purchased one - total $32.98-

Re: THE EGYPTIAN — How probable is a re-issue (from Varese themselves or any other label) of the 2-CD set?

I'm tempted to shell out big money for this ... but before I do I'll ask again: What are the chances of a reissue of the 2-CD set? Crystal balls out everyone ... wink

You might try emailing Bruce Kimmel of Kritzerland about it; I have a feeling he's love to reissue this score and might even improve the sound (as he did and is planning to continue doing with other titles included in the Varese Herrmann box that they don't own in perpetuity).

Thanks for answering, Yavar, and the suggestion. E-mail is sent. I'm curious what Mr Kimmel has got to say on this matter.

Since FSM put out an album of the original tracks first, and the Varese 2CD issue was a limited title (only 1500 which sold out really fast), I'd be surprised if they acquired perpetuity rights on it, so it should be possible for Bruce to tackle. But who knows, if he's not interested maybe Intrada or LLL (after all, the latter reissued Newman's The Robe after the Varese had long sold out) would do it...MV at LLL has said for years that he'd like to do Herrmann on his label but no suitable projects have been available. I don't see how it could possibly fail at 1000 copies, especially if the packaging/mastering/liner notes were improved somehow...

I'd buy it since I missed out on the Varese. Have kept my eyes open for a reasonably priced copy but nothing so far.
Mind you, I'll also buy any Herrmann scores from the Herrmann at Fox box Kritzerland can put out as well.
Do we know which ones Varese have in perp?

I also contacted LLLR about the chance of an EGYPTIAN reissue and here is what I have just received via e-mail:

Quote:
"A very good chance"

So this is what I feel like at the moment:

It's too good a score to be a limited edition, IMO. I have all of the previous releases and don't need a new one, but I'm totally in favor of a non-limited edition "while interest and quantities remain" style release.

Congrats! That's kinda the best possible option. Here's hoping for Jeff Bond notes to supplement the Julie Kirgo ones, and for a gorgeous Jim Titus package! smile

Thanks for that. I shall stop looking at ebay for this now and wait.

Some things could be fixed on a reissue.

On the two disc set, many scenes that should be one piece of music are split up into separate tracks.

Also, there aretwo scenes with nefer that feature a prominent female vocalist humming.

The first time is at the Lotus pool. that voacal is there.
The second time is when Nefer comes to sinuhe to be treated for a disease. that vocal is missing.
But Fox must have it. That vocal was recorded only once and Herrmann conducted the two different pieces over the same vocal.
The Egyptian had a lot of great artwork created for the film. We could use a better cover.

I remember reading on MV's Facebook status or was it here at FSM on the 2015 agenda and there was indeed Bernard Herrmann mentioned. So, who know it could be this title amongst it. I'm quite content with my quota of THE EGYPTIAN (FSM, Marco Polo, Varese and the Varese Box set), Good chance for those who missed it.

Because of the booklet notes, artwork and the slight upgrade in sound quality-I ordered this again in the LLL sale window.
