Well I am really surprised this movie hasn't been released on Blu-Ray yet. This movie is one of my all-time favs from the 80's and the score by Goldsmith is just superb!

In my opinion, I don't expect this movie to hit blu-ray until 2013...it'll be the 25th Anniversary that year. I really thought I'd see it in 2008 @ the 20th Anniversary but Goonies didn't hit Bluray 'til 2010 @ its 25th.

What is your ideas on the Burbs? Anyone have any info?

By far one of the most laugh out loud hilarious scores ever... His sound effects are absolutely perfect and if I ever need my mood lifted I will pop this in.

As for the movie, I was surprised to read about people not liking it! It's as hilarious as the score! Just a fantastic early Hanks movie. When it eventually comes out on Blu-ray, I will purchase it immediately!

I love the movie - right from its modified, opening "Universal Logo" shot that continually zooms in. Over in this Blu-ray.com forum thread ( http://forum.blu-ray.com/wish-lists/155395-burbs-bring-love-universal.html ), someone writes from 2010 "I asked Joe Dante himself and he said that Universal have no interest in this film. That coupled with their terrible release history for catalog stuff on Blu Ray means...we're never getting it. " However, "never" is fairly implausible and any number of people discussing Blu-Ray (and DVD before it) releases before their release have sometimes written that the director or studio apparently had no interest, and low and behold, the title eventually came to be. Maybe as an anniversary tie-in, like you say. Here's hoping. smile

A lot of people don't get The 'Burbs.

I adore it. Everything about it is great. The actors, the characters they play, the music (that rhythmic dog barking effect. Love it), the toupee, the bees, the chanting.

Rumsfield stepping in poo.

The house blowing up.

The non-Slavic name Klopek. They wanna kill everyone and Satan is their pal.

Hans and not Christian Andersen. Not Zimmer either.

Love this movie and snapped up the DVD as soon as I could. A blu-ray would be great but it would be as barebones as the DVD if it were ever released, and as Trekfan said the chances of that are extraordinarily slim to none.

A lot of people don't get The 'Burbs.

It seems a lot of people don't get Joe Dante's movies or something. In any event, I love The 'Burbs as well. It's been a staple of my family's viewing habit ever since it came out. I got to it in the theater as a special sneak preview. I went to the movies with my mom and brother one evening, and the manager came in to tell us about a preview of an upcoming movie that would play after the main feature. I wanted to leave at first when it started because it looked like it'd be a scary movie, but before long the entire theater was just laughing and enjoying the film. So many great scenes and quotable lines.

Would love to see a new issue with a remastered print, deleted scenes, Dante commentary, etc.

Oh yeah, and the score. It's my favorite Dante/Goldsmith collaboration.

A Joe Dante Film. It's won me. For a time I use to watch ' The 'Burbs ' once a year. It's a good Saturday afternoon movie. I missed the soundtrack the first time around, but i made sure that I didn't the 2nd time. You would've thought by now that there would have been a Special Edition released on DVD. His recent movie 'The Hole' hasn't been released here in Australia, so i had to buy it from overseas to watch it.

If you like special edition of ' The 'Burbs' check out this page:

An HD version (that looks quite good) of the movie has been broadcast regularly, so who knows? Maybe it appears first as an import, but would that matter? Matinee already has a French Blu-ray, and that looks good too.

It's a good Saturday afternoon movie.

That or a Sunday afternoon are the only times I've really watched it because it's just such a perfect time.

Tom Hanks needs to push Universal for a features-laden Blu Ray. He has mentioned several times his fondess for the movie and how he felt it was a neglected classic.

Hell I love this movie. Guess we're gonna watch it this weekend big grin

I just started my 4 week vacation today and every year I tend to make a habit of watching THE BURBS during this time.

THE BURBS is my favourite comedy along with MAJOR LEAGUE.

That's probably the case with most of his movies, sadly. Most of them didn't even get a proper DVD release, even though Dante was more than happy to collaborate.

I know that Dana Olsen (the screenwriter) was credited as being a cop in the film but I don't know which cop he played. The only cop I recognize was Kevin Gage.

For years I was wondering if he even made it on screen or not but got the credit anyway!

In addition to The 'burbs, Matinee, Explorers, and Innerspace all deserve better versions, although at least Innerspace got a great commentary. Explorers has two deleted scenes, although according to Dante the studio basically released his Workprint because they wanted it out quickly. He was never able to complete it, and sadly all the unused footage is apparently long gone now. But fortunately, others like The Howling, both Gremlins, and Piranha got some good stuff, from commentary to featurettes, to deleted scenes/outtakes.

At the link above that razorback64 posted, there's an interview with Dana Olsen, and he's asked about his appearance. He says he played the cop who tells Carrie Fisher that she can't cross the police line when she returns at the end of the film. Was great to finally find out where he is in the film. smile

Den of Geek published a nice piece yesterday on "The Burbs", with screenshots. I thought it was a fun read and might interest those in this FSM thread.

Here it is:
