Can someone explain to me why does all the cool releases packed with bonus features, etc, never get released here in the U.S?
Welcome to the UK during the first 10 years of DVD.
Amen to that! So true! (for every country in Europe)
I got an e-mail from Arrow about the UK release:
"In undertaking the restoration of this film as well as securing some very exciting extras we have moved the release date to accommodate these wonderful new acquisitions. The 'burbs will now be released on September 15th"
Can someone explain to me why does all the cool releases packed with bonus features, etc, never get released here in the U.S? Will this ever change or should we all just buy region free players? I want this Burbs release.
You folks have the Criterion Collection. That reason alone was why I purchased a cheap US player whilst visiting last year. Multi-region players have come down in price quite a bit during recent months.
This 'Burbs release is going to be terrific. I remember reading somewhere that Tom Hanks really likes the film, so it's a shame he couldn't be secured for the documentary. I like the Goldsmith / Dante focus idea for the booklet.
If you wanted decent editions of anything in the UK, you HAD to get a multi-region player. That's why there were dedicated websites aimed at Brits importing region 1 discs like Play USA and DVD World USA.
How true. All my DVD players were multi-region, & about a third of my DVD's were R1. If you were a film fan back then you had to be multi-region. With Blu-ray I'm just region B & it's worked out OK so far, there are a few region A releases I'd like, but nothing worth buying a multi-region player (I looked into it & you're paying twice the price). And the films I want, there's a very good chance they'll be released in France, Germany or the UK.
I got the UK Blu-ray yesterday. The disc is region B coded only. I've tested the disc in my region A player. A rundown of the extras with running time:
Audio commentary by writer Dana Olsen, moderated by author Calum Waddell Workprint version of the film with deleted and alternate scenes (105:57) Isolated music and effects track (PCM 2.0 stereo) "There Goes the Neighbourhood: The Making of The 'Burbs" documentary (66:33) "A Tale of Two 'Burbs" featurette about the differences between the theatrical version and workprint version with optional audio commentary by director Joe Dante (23:37) Alternate ending (6:38) Theatrical trailer (1:33) 32-page collector's booklet with "Not in My Backyard: Revisiting Joe Dante's The 'Burbs" article by Kenneth J. Souza and "The Dante/Goldsmith Project" article by Michael Heintzelman
The article in the booklet about the relationship with Joe Dante and Jerry Goldsmith was originally published in Film Score Monthly in 2005.
But anyone who has a line on a region-free BD player that is cheap and actually works, this would be a great time to post some links.
Depends on how much people want to pay. I recently purchased a Samsung BD-F5700 region free blu ray player from Bombay Electronics. The service was good and player is great and plays anything I have in my collection. Prices are reasonable, but I like I said, it depends on how much you want to pay.
Universal has released the domestic Blu Ray, but sadly as a bare bones disc with none of the supplements from the Arrow disc of course.
It's a Best Buy exclusive for now but will be available everywhere in August. Got mine yesterday. It would have been nice to have some kind of extra content, but hey at least it's on Blu Ray
