Hi guys, there's been a Blu-ray Special Edition of Silent Running announced here in the UK for November, part of the Masters Of Cinema range, who have struck a deal with Universal to bring out a number of prestigous releases, including Touch Of Evil in three versions!

Silent Running seems to have gotten a new HD remaster and special features. Take a look at amazon.co.uk for the gorgeous cover design. Don't suppose it's any signal of a CD release of the score, but very often it seems OST releases are tied in to Blu-ray releases? It's been a grail of mine for many years, here's hoping!

I'm not a lover of the score although it works well in the movie.

I still have the LP of the score on green vinyl! Surely it must have been one of the few soundtracks issued in anything other than standard black vinyl (I still have the first uk issue of the Star Wars double album which looks black but is actually transparent red if you hold it up to the light).

Apologies if this is old news, but I haven't seen this in any of the other threads about this score. It seems the new Masters of Cinema Blu-Ray has an isolated Music & Effects track. Can anyone confirm this? And is the Blu-Ray region-free?

I'm not sure, but I think the film is Region B.

I read somewhere (probably on Wikipedia :/ ) that Disney tried to put the Black Hole LP on multicolored vinyl but the process wasn't quite worked out at the time.

Silent Running is such a great film, not sure if I'd buy the soundtrack though. Recently I've been watching the original Battlestar Galactica and Galactica 1980 television series, and the Valley Forge ship makes appearances throughout. Nice re-use of materials by Doug Trumbull, a man truly ahead of his time who gave a unique look to many of my favorite films.

Sorry to go off topic, btw!

The new blu-ray does have an isolated score and effects track. The one track that's notably missing from the album is the first "operation music" cue when the drones operate on Bruce Dern's leg. It's very clean in the isolated track with just a little bit of a circular saw whine in there.

This is certainly a non-traditional score but I've always loved it--there are some beautiful moments and it's particularly good working in "miniature" to the best effect of the small ensemble of players. One thing I forgot is that the original "making of" documentary includes Peter Schickele's first stab at the "spaceship fleet" reveal played against the montage of shots of the Valley Forge and her sister ships in space from early in the movie. This cue is on the original album and follows the "anthem-like" cue for the spaceships that's heard in the film--I'd always wondered what that music was for until I interviewed Schickele for FSM years ago and he told me about it. Although the image quality on the making-of documentary is quite poor (the blu-ray transfer of the film is stupendous however), it's fascinating to see how Schickele's music follows the on-screen action in the original cue.

Thanks for the info, Jeff! I may have to pick this up, if I ever obtain a player that can play it. (Fingers crossed for an equivalent Region A release.)

I dont give up the hope, that the score will released by someone on CD some day.

Its defenetly a classic score for a cult SciFi movie, wich many of us known from our youth and wich guided us through the 70s and 80`s (were the film also was often shown in television), thanks of the Varese LP-Release.

Think about much more obscure soundtracks for SCiFi- films like ANDROMEDA STRAIN, SOYLENT GREEN and RAVENGERS wich find their way finally on CD (without any LP release before, except ANDROMEDA as super rare pressing, wich many guys never had in their hands).
I was allways surprised (and very happy), about these releases and often thought by me: Will SILENT RUNNING be the next?

I allways had FSM or Intrada in mind for a release .
I dont think, Varese would do it again. They release the LP, but this was another time and my impression is, SILENT RUNNING isnt longer a release, that would interesting R. Townsen today.

But for FSM, with just 6 or 7 CDs left after closing down, I would be VERY surprised (but also very happy), if one of the few would indeed be SILENT RUNNING!

So maybe Intrada will make it happend!

By the way: The film is from 1972?
Than 2012 would be the best year for a release, because it`s the 40th Annivesary of the movie (damned, iam getting old)!

I love this score too. The main title is especially piquant. I have a super-clean digital transfer of the LP, but I'd buy a CD release if it were expanded or if it had the kind of liner notes we get from FSM, LLL, and Intrada.

I still have the LP of the score on green vinyl!

I own two LP copies but don't remember the green vinyl at all.
Maybe for the US market only?

Got to chime in on this one. It's LONG overdue for a CD release. I have the Varese LP and a bootleg CD of same. It's one of those lost gems that demands a release. I hope that FSM will do this in their last few releases....I hope and pray.

FSM doesn't handle Universal film releases on to CD.

Jonny Trunk released a limited edition of Barry Gray's music for Gerry Anderson's UFO which was pressed on transparent vinyl.

On February 10, 2012, the UCLA Film & Television Archive, the Visual Effects Society and Universal Pictures will present an "Evening With Douglas Trumbull" at UCLA's Billy Wilder Theater. The evening will be highlighted by a Blu-ray screening of "Silent Running." (Hopefully this presages a U.S. release of same.). Reservations are free.

is there much more music that's not on the LP? Or is the LP fairly representative?
