I have just finished watching Free Willy 2 with my children (its just shown on ITV) and it really does have an amazing epic score by Basil Poledouris.

The 10 mins on the CD are good but there is well over an hour of music in this score and really does deserve a full CD release, as does Free Willy (although that did get 30 great minutes released).

I would love to know and certainly hold out hope that our favourite labels have these brilliant scores in their sites.

Great scores.

Eidelman's score for the third is no slouch either.

I'd love to see them given proper treatment someday.

Heck, I'd love to see a Poledouris "Blue Box" with all his water, (sub)marine, boat and otherwise aquatic scores. big grin

When anyone mentions holy grails, these top my list. I appreciate the little we have, but there is so much more. Brendon, I hope someone chimes in with some useful info (I wouldn't need the songs, but is the licensing complex?)

Free Willy & the 2 were released by Epic Records I believe. Honestly I don't know how much music Poledouris scored for both films? But I'm sure a 2 disc set will be most welcome.

Also I think Epic also released Star Trek V back in '89. And LLL complete score last year. So there is a possibility.

I recently rewatched the first two films to check out Basil's complete scores...I was limited on time and didn't do complete score breakdowns (maybe one day), but I can tell everyone that there is roughly an hour or more of each score in complete form. This means only half of Free Willy has been released, and less than a fifth of Free Willy 2!

The lack of the latter on CD is the real tragedy. The first Free Willy had some nice unreleased bits, but overall the original album was a fantastic half-hour program of highlights from the score. I would say that over half of the music left off the album tends more towards the poppy/synthy side of the spectrum, rather than the powerful orchestral stuff. Now Free Willy 2, on the other hand, is frankly AMAZING all the way through. The three cues on the official soundtrack barely scratch the surface of this score, which in complete form eclipses the original in every way. Old themes are reprised in creative (and less synthy) new ways, new themes are introduced and interwoven, everything is developed in grand fashion. I really hope one of our beloved labels is working on these two wonderful scores, but particularly the second.

(And as an Eidelman fan, I want Free Willy 3 complete too...though I've never seen the film and the score is Varese-controlled.)

A little over a decade ago, I was riding the bus during this brief period where they must have been letting bus drivers in Boulder, CO choose their own music. The bus driver was playing the Free Willy soundtrack from start to finish. I own it, I recognized it, so obviously it's not for me to judge, but there was something about a hearing grown middle-aged man playing this synthy kids' music in a public space that made me feel really sad and embarrassed for both of us.

I'm wondering if the involvement of Michael Jackson on the musical front is keeping the first two scores from being expanded.

This has gotta win some sort of award for best FSM post of 2016.

Great scores, but I'm pleased with the existing release(s). I was once sent a "set" of FREE WILLY scores that also included Eidelman's efforts. I always assumed this was a legit release, but perhaps it wasn't? Do any of you know about such a set?

Nice to have a thread started by me resurrected! Crikey where did those five years go!???

Still love these scores, grown up or not! Still waiting for a proper release of all three FW scores.

Still hoping for an expanded score to both the original and sequel. Hmmm maybe a 2 CD set would be a little to extreme? IDK but fingers are crossed for their re-releases.

A brave, brave man. I feel sad an embarrased anybody is sad or ambarrased for him. Now, if he got on "Star Search" or "America's Got Talent" and showed up his talent of singing the score from start to finish, I might feel embarrased for him.

Indeed, the man was a hero - the Nelson Mandela of listening to Free Willy on the bus!

Thor, you're being really tiresome again. We *know* you're always "pleased with the existing release(s)". And I wouldn't bother replying about it now, but strangely after saying that, you also claim have some special Free Willy set you were sent. So presumably you never did buy the commercial releases after all? If you had, then you would know that Free Willy 2's soundtrack album has THREE SHORT CUES, totaling just over 10 minutes! That is LESS THAN A SIXTH of the score! Surely, even you wouldn't be presumptuous enough to declare that to be a sufficient representation of the score? Because I just took the trouble to watch through the film and hear the score in its entirety, and it is truly fantastic, one of Basil's best orchestral works...the three cues on the soundtrack are not able to remotely show the degree of composition and thematic development the score contains.

So if you do somehow have more than the 10 minutes on the commercial album release, you're a lucky, lucky man because I've never heard of any release of this music, commercial or not. But whether you actually have more music or not, your opinion -- on Free Willy 2 at least -- really isn't valid! Free Willy or Free Willy 3, maybe you could be right (I haven't heard Free Willy 3 in full form, though the album is still less than half an hour).

An expanded treatment of these movies is way overdue. Any indication this will happen anytime soon???

No. And since the first two soundtrack albums are Sony-owned and there was a moratorium on third party licensing from them earlier this year, the signs aren’t looking good. frown

The biggest loss here is Free Willy 2. I hope someday the Sony situation changes back again.

That’s a major bummer. So I guess our only is hope they do something for the next major anniversary like they did with Ghostbusters??
