HBO has announced a re-release of their pair of critically acclaimed WWII miniseries Band of Brothers and The Pacific. The Band of Brothers/The Pacific: Special Edition Gift Set will combine both previous Blu-ray releases of the WWII dramas and feature an all new documentary, He Has Seen War. A release date of November 8th has been set. Band of Brothers premiered on HBO back in 2001 and was a hit for executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The 10-part miniseries followed Easy Company through their training in Georgia to their deployment in war-torn Germany. It starred Damian Lewis, Ron Livingston, David Schwimmer, Colin Hanks and James McAvoy. The producing tandem of Spielberg and Hanks teamed up once again for the 2010 miniseries The Pacific. This series (also 10 episodes) centered on the 1st Marine Division and their experiences in Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. It starred Joseph Mazzello, James Badge Dale and Jon Seda This Special Edition Gift Set will include the same discs released on the two miniseries' previous Blu-ray releases. New content will include the documentary, He Has Seen War, which features interviews with WWII veterans of Easy Company and the 1st Marine Division. For more information on the shows, check out our individual reviews of Band of Brothers and The Pacific. HBO has priced the set, which includes over 20 hours of feature runtime, at $64.99 http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=7068

I'm a big fan of 'BAND OF BROTHERS'. I bought the set in it's silvery metal box and watch it once each year, or thereabouts. I have yet to grow tired of 'Band'. 'THE PACIFIC' is not nearly as good, but it is still excellent. Pacific didn't grab me the way Band of Brothers did. There remains some terrific, nerve-wracking intensity in many segments of Pacific, but it just didn't have the same impact on me. I don't think I could watch the entire 'Pacific' set again anytime soon. Others may disagree. Thanks for the tip though, my Dad will be happy.

Still a great deal, and over 20 hours! I'm leaning towards ordering it, but who has the time to watch it??? johnjohnson: You say $199.99 but when I went to Amazon it looked like the combined set was far less than that, although it shows this: Band of Brothers / The Pacific 2011 Unrated Special Edition Gift Set $159.96 $64.99 Blu-ray I need to go back to Amazon to verify the price, until March 1st, for both. I'm back, and what I show at Amazon is this: List Price: $159.96 Price: $64.99 & FREE Shipping. You Save: $94.97 (59%) So the LIST price is $159.96 but the price to us is $64.99 with free shipping, all until 3/1. So you may want to change your $199.99 price in the initial posting above! (Your link is to BlueRay.com, not Amazon.)

The Amazon sale is coming to an end later today, and I had almost chosen NOT to buy the set, assuming that it would be just one more big box that I would never watch. But in the wee hours I impulsively ordered it, and hope that I can have a marathon weekend for each series and enjoy them in Blu-ray with thrilling surround. Bring 'em on!
