Why bump this old thread instead of the actual thread for the new LLL CD?

Have always liked, maybe even loved, the John Williams soundtrack, and often used the vocal cues in compilations I made of arias and choruses. Included cues in several of my iPod playlists. And will order the expanded soundtrack on the 24th.

I will not rest until the track which might be called I Can Bring Everyone Back is finally released. It's one of the finest worldess choral cues ever to inhabit m'everlovin' mind's ear.

You can rest now, H.
And learn to spell wordless, while you're at it.

“'It is, in a strong if minority opinion (mine included), Spielberg’s greatest film,' Ms. Haskell writes in the book."
cool

from today's (print) NY Times--

SPIELBERG BY HASKELL at the Metrograph (Jan. 14-18). To complement the publication of “Steven Spielberg: A Life in Films,” a study of Mr. Spielberg’s movies by the critic Molly Haskell, the Metrograph is showing five of that director’s features. On Jan. 14, Ms. Haskell will introduce “Empire of the Sun” (1987), adapted from J. G. Ballard’s semi-autobiographical novel and starring a young Christian Bale as a British boy separated from his parents during the Japanese invasion of Shanghai in 1941. A project Mr. Spielberg took up from David Lean, the movie is one of the director’s most strikingly realized historical re-creations — a feat of production design and cinematography. “It is, in a strong if minority opinion (mine included), Spielberg’s greatest film,” Ms. Haskell writes in the book. The screening, at 2:30 p.m., will be followed by a book signing. “A.I.: Artificial Intelligence” (Jan. 15 and 18), “Minority Report” (Jan. 16) and “Catch Me If You Can” (Jan. 17) will follow in the series. At the time of the film's release, I was taking a class taught by the late critic Andrew Sarris, Haskell's husband. He was also very taken with the film, and frequently praised it to classmates of mine who were befuddled by it.

Because it wasn't a typical Spielberg film?

Because it wasn't a typical Spielberg film?

But it was....it was very typical of him to direct unexpected film subjects.

I compare its unpredictability to "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind", "1941" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

Since then we've had "Schindler's List" and so many atypical projects from Spielberg.
