No response from Lakeshore or Del Toro as well. If the record label once licences CD and download release of a score and pays for the rights to release it in both formats, how can the production company later change the terms of the contract and have any say in what format it is available? Normally you don't find a horror score this lyrical and lush. My favorite passages are where the strings take the music box-esque melody, first heard in Gramophone Lullaby. It does have some horror-worthy passages as well, but it doesn't devolve into a simply cacophony of noise. Color me impressed again with Beltrami and Sanders. I bought it on iTunes back in '11 and thought it was great, but the presentation unsatisfying, and having since found the expanded release - Wow, lots of good stuff got left off the original release, and the album arrangement very questionable (why close it with one of the more forgettable suspense cues, "Voices from the Pit"?) I have to wonder - Between this, MIMIC and HELLBOY, why doesn't Beltrami always write music this good? Is it truly Del Toro's guiding hand? The only non-Del Toro score of Beltrami's that I've heard that I've loved is DAVID AND LISA from back in '98. Anyway - Love the orchestrations in this one - The abundance of harp, vibraphone, low winds, etc. is truly a great homage to the 70's and early 80's orchestral horror sound we got from Goldsmith, Richard Band, early Horner, etc. never mind the distinctly slashing string figures of Herrmann. It all actually sounds more like a Roque Banos score to my ears than anything else Beltrami has ever given us.    Posted:   Dec 1, 2014 - 10:05 AM     By:   spook   (Member) Such a shame that a film's performance damns a great score. I actually quite enjoyed the movie and have seen a LOT worse but the Beltrami score is just the top of his game for me. I think at the time THE THING got most of the attention but this score has always blown that out of the water for me. I loved his work on THE WOMAN IN BLACK to but DONT BE AFRAID just shines from him ( and mr Sanders to of course!) Damn!! Undoubtly one of the best scores of this year!! Why?? Just finished listening to this gem again as part of Composer series. For me, this is one of Beltrami's best along with Hellboy, Soul Surfer and Live Free and Die Hard.
