I just heard about this release and initially I wasn't terribly interested in picking it up, but I gave the samples a spin and holy cow I forgot how much I enjoyed this score. I've got the record album but I rarely listen to it. I just want to say thanks to Intrada for doing a second pressing of this, because if this had only been limited to 3000 copies, I would've been screwed (I'm still kicking myself for not picking up Ghostbusters when I had the chance). I don't care about which edition it is (though I appreciate that some do), I just care about the music. I'll probably order it by the end of the week along with The Black Hole.

Thanks so much everybody for all the discussion of the score and helping me with my decision. I'm not on here all the time so I usually have to rely on all you fine folks for your reviews and insight.

Pleasantly surprised that this is a fan favorite.
There are those Goldsmith fans who don't like scores that use alot of synths.
This certainly showcases his synth/symphony writing at its most enjoyable.

check itout!

Just listening to it right now. What a gorgeous score. And the Intrada CD sounds fantastic.

I agree with you about this being a gorgeous score. This is one that I had mixed feelings since I had owned the LP and Varese CD ever since they were released, but Intrada did do the right thing expanding this one. A lot of great music was left off the MCA versions, which Intrada has included. I also do not miss the songs.

I've loved this score ever since the LP came out. What a treat to have the expanded edition, and none of those terrible rock songs!

I just grabbed a sealed copy off of eBay. I discovered a 14 minute suite on youtube the other day and was like, "This is fantastic!". Can't wait to give it a spin.

It's so good. Those YouTube suites are pretty haphazardly put together sometimes.

I have both versions.

I recall getting the VS version in the longbox, not having seen the movie. I thought it was pure magic so light, childlike, adventurous, and sonically so off the wall creative and different. It is a totally through and through work of Jerry-brilliance. This kind of amazing integration of synths sitting in with orchestra so seamlessly complimenting each other and swelling and dancing along. It is an utterly masterful and delightful score.

The motif for Dick Miller's character is one of the best things Goldsmith ever wrote.

I think magical is a great word to describe this. The main theme is so infectious and soaring. I can't really put it into words, but whenever I listen to a score by Jerry it feels so personal and intimate- almost like he's in the same room. There's just something about his harmonic, orchestration, and structural choices that make his work so incredibly distinctive.

So...I just discovered this thread (having recently acquired a copy of the Intrada release). Was this the title that brought about the change from 'limited number' pressings to 'while interest remains'?

AFAIK, yes. Congrats on snagging a copy of this most excellent score. Jerry Goldsmith always seemed t be particularly inspired when collaborating with Joe Dante. I believe you'll find many parts of the score to be quite affecting, even though the subject of the film itself is rather slight. Goldsmith had an incredible knack for getting to the very heart of a film (Mr. Baseball notwithstanding) regardless of its superficial aspects.
