Another list thread... yay! roll eyes

This would be far more interesting if you could tell us why you favour one label over the other.

Agreed.

I think Intrada and Varese are the main labels for me. They're very eclectic in their choices, and usually have top-notch production values. Plus, I have a history with both. I think Varese is on top, since I have more releases from them than anyone else.

LaLaLand has always been somewhat frustrating to me, since I absolutely LOVE their choices in scores (usually right up my alley!), but then they often release them in a format I can't stand (C&C), so I wind up not buying them anyway. Intrada and Varese do that too on occasion, but not so often. They have more straight CD and LP reissues.

I was never really in the target audience for FSM, neither in terms of the musical presentation nor choice of titles. But they've released some unreleased Williams gems, and for that I will be eternally grateful.

Hollywood Records has done some good stuff and Silva has really become a force to be reckoned with.

Beyond that, I really only have sporadic relationships to the various specialty labels, but I often like the more mainstream releases by the big labels, like MCA, Sony etc.

1. Intrada
The quality matters. Their graphic design and mixes rarely disappoints and I love the selection of titles they've released.

2. La-La Land
Great selection of titles, probably fits my taste the best out of all the labels. Huge improvements in graphic design and presentation over the last year, but still the occasional hiccup which is why I can't give them first place. But they are getting there smile

3. FSM
I equal the quality of releases to intrada, but like Thor, I don't count myself in their main target group, so the selection has often been less appealing (genre and age).

4. Varese
Feels like I'm having a falling out with the big label over the last couple of years. They have been releasing some great ones this year, but I do consider them lagging behind the other labels in terms of content and presentation. It's been a while since I was blown away by a club batch and the regular releases are still a gamble, do I get them now or double dip when they do a deluxe? You catch my drift.

5. Lakeshore records
Being a Chris Young fan, I love the releases Lakeshore puts out (amongst many other great titles) so I have to mention this label smile

1. FSM
2. Universal Music France/Emarcy (Écoutez le Cinéma)
3. Tadlow
4. Intrada
5. Varèse

FSM has always led the field in terms of booklets. They are the best designed and have often been the most comprehensive ones. Intrada's booklets have often looked a bit uninspired, but have caught up recently (but one column pages still make for worse reading by default). Varèse's core merit is volume, they provide the daily bread and butter of soundtrack albums, but their design is simply poor (boring booklet design and the worst point: centered tracklists with more than one track per line). Last but not least Varèse gives the least value for money when it comes to limited releases (read: most expensive CDs).

Why do we have to have threads like this? You know you are asking for trouble!

1, La-La Land Records
Why?
If I would run a film music label, most of the titles from this label is titles I would have done if I had been a soundtrack producer.

2, Intrada
Why?
They have proven several times that the so-called "missing/lost masters" can be found and therefore showing us that a label can surprise us time after time, nothing is impossible for these guys.

3, Varese and especially their CD Club
Why?
I am a soundtrack COLLECTOR and Varese`s CD club is the place to be if you want to collect some limited edition soundtracks and I feel lucky not only to get my hands on some great now sold out releases but also proud to be aware of this CD Club.

4, FSM
Why?
Even if I do not (yet) own so many of FSM`s releases I am glad that Lukas Kendall started this label because without his vision I would not have Jerry Goldsmith`s The Prize. I had this on LP and it was not many minutes of JG`s score on that soundtrack but now with the help of Mr. Kendall I have a lot more now, thanks man.

5, MovieScore Media
Why?
I will tell you a true story: Some years ago I went to a Video Game concert in Malmö, Sweden with Mikael (Carlsson, the owner of MovieScore Media) and when we were there he suddenly said that he was about to start a label and he asked me if I had a suggestion for a name. But no it was not my suggestion that he would take the name of his old defunct film music magazine (I was one of the subscribers of this printed magazine).

1. Kritzerland - They have provided a lot of great titles and one release every two weeks is better for my budget. I always know what is coming somewhat in advance and the samples have mostly been representative of the album. Mastering is always phenomenal, best I've heard from any small labels.

2. Intrada - Great selection and a few great golden age scores. Mastering is always top notch and they have released a lot of great titles over the past few years.

3. FSM - Despite often odd choices for releases, there have been many quality titles released and the mastering is always top notch. Liner notes are always a treat smile

4. Tadlow/Prometheus - Despite one release I disagreed with the mastering on, they mostly tend to master properly and the re-recordings sound great. Now that Prometheus has joined forces with Tadlow and hasn't released much lately I consider them together.

5. Quartet Records - A year ago I would have picked MovieScore Media but I haven't seen enough great releases by them in the last year so this spot goes to Quartet for their quality releases, great selection of samples, and overall great releases.

Times have changed and with the labels that are still releasing scores, I would have to say:

1. Intrada
1. LaLaLand
3. Quartet
4. Music Box
5. Varese Sarabande

Yes, the top two are tied, but 80% of my purchases come from those two labels. Years ago, Varese was on the top, but with their silly sets they have dropped. They are still in the top 5.

Nobody did presentation better than the (defunct) FSM label. Everything from liner notes (even Jeff Bond's) to photo selection and cue arrangement was best done by FSM, and I'm not just stating this because I'm posting on their message board.

FSM was the best.

No votes for Stylotone?

They have so far released only two albums, one of which I own and the other of which doesn't interest me.

Depends on which labels deposit the most amount of money into my bank account.
