Amazon is thinking of raising it's rates for Prime by $20 to $40 dollars a month!

But isn't it a yearly fee? I just renewed Prime for the year on Jan 12th for $79.

Sorry, I meant to say up $20 to $40 dollars a year.

Had a feeling that was what you meant. Hope it only goes up $20. My wife was dubious at first, but man, she loves that 2-day shipping. I wouldn't mind paying $100. a year. It really paid for itself this year.

With the dissolve of net neutrality ATT is already talking about charging customers more for bandwidth like Netlix. Certainly Netflix and other streaming companies should be fighting this. Because I will certainly drop the service if it substantially raises my internet rates.

Well, this might explain the impending price hike.

It works for HBO. I would never pay an inflated price for a premium service just because it offered one or two exclusive shows. But I guess that's where we are heading.

I will also drop streaming like a hot potato if there are huge rate hikes for individual services -- and also if my internet provider hikes rates or starts a metered system which, in effect, would be a rate hike. Let's raise a toast to the impending demise of the golden age of physical media...welcome brave new, expensive, streaming world.

So now Amazon is upping the ante, creating their own Roku-like product, that also works as a game controller of some kind.

The world need another DVR streaming type device like we need another war. There are tons of streaming devices, this thing is all about getting you to buy Amazon content and products. Anyway, Netflix is clearly the better streaming service, with loads of more content. Amazon is late to the game in streaming and original content, personally I think that Bezos should stick to what they always did best.

Amazon prime has gone up $20 -- so a year's membership will be $99. I will not be renewing at that price with so many other prices going up like rent, gas, electric, etc., etc.. I sent Amazon an email that unfortunately due to inflationary increases across the Board in my life, some fluff had to go -- and unfortunately they were a part of the fluff.

Re: Netflix is clearly the better streaming service, with loads of more content

I had both the mail and streaming services of Netflix for several years, but could rarely find much that I wanted to stream, so would often go months without streaming a thing, until I realized that it was wasted on me. But I've long had AT&T's full U-verse with tons of HD premium channels, so it's pretty hard for Netflix to compete with that. Nor have I been that impressed with the Netflix original programming -- thought their version of "House of Cards" de-fanged the principal character played by Kevin Spacey, although I cancelled before season 2 started -- but haven't been encouraged by reviews I've read of it.

I'll stick with my Apple TV for now. wink Currently Apple still lets a customer download their video purchases, thus having the ability to "own" or hold onto a copy locally. I assume Amazon is all streaming? Of course I can play any of my iTunes playlist as well. Further more I can convert any video/movie to mp4 and play it on my Apple TV via iTunes. I assume Amazon Fire doesn't have that feature. I surmise the day will come when iTunes switches to streaming only, so I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I have been an Amazon Prime member for almost a year and never streamed any videos on my computer. I had it just for shipping. I decided to try out this Fire TV device as it can be returned for a full refund for 30 days and still returned after that for a pro-rated refund. I figured I wouldn't loose any money if it didn't work.

I just unpacked it about three hours ago and plugged it in. Within a few minutes I watched Jack Reacher in High Definition with no setup and no internet shuddering or wait. I was totally shocked how smooth it went. The menus are a bit confusing and my main complaint so far is that they don't do a decent job marking the videos in searches as prime viewable without an extra fee versus normal paid streaming.

I still have to mess with it a bunch before I decide if I am going to keep it. It does Netflix and the rest but I don't have any of those services.

Amazon gets and exclusive deal with HBO and will show series such as Sorprano's. Though there will be a three year wait before new series makes it's way to Amazon according to the contract. So I guess no Game of Thrones anytime soon. This has to sting for Netflix.

Sorry but this Amazon Fire box thing is just a gimmick that a lot of other people already have covered pretty well, and when you see it for what it really is it is really just sales device that they are trying to convince you to pay for, so that you can pay for more things from Amazon.

Tivo remains the best DVR.

Shocker, just discovered Apple TV comes with an Amazon Prime app! I'm afraid to ask, can you purchase individual episodes or seasons or do you have to pay a monthly fee which is basically another cable subscription service?
