Okay, this is on repeated rotation and it gets better each time ... phenomenally beautiful and engaging score by one of the greats. Hearty recommendation for those who may still be on the fence about it. I'd say you won't regret it. Plus it's a 78-minute programme in superb acoustic quality. Well done & thanks, Kritzerland!
I play this one very often. It's a real gem. I agree that the main theme is gorgeous and haunting. Please view the film if you haven't done so. Elmer's score is even more impressive in that context.
TWICE-TOLD TALES, a 1963 Vincent Price horror film, clearly shows the influence of Bernstein's 1962 score. The characteristic downward octave runs all through Richard La Salle's music for the U.A. movie.
Can it be true that five years (!) after its release fewer than 1500 people in a world of 7.4 billion have purchased this CD? Tennessee Williams has been - like - box office poison for more than 45 years.
I suspect the only way today's young audiences would watch Summer and Smoke would be if they are forced to view it by a highly-cultivated teacher during a High School English class ... a fate not unlike those of ancient Greek tragedies.

I watched it around the time the score came out. Quite enjoyed it. Though at that time I was in my late 20s so not as young as I expect people meant here.

Or if anyone is anywhere near Santa Barbara on December 5th you can see it in a beautiful picture palace introduced by Jon Burlingame and probably with the Bernstein family in attendance.

Glad you liked it. The RCA LP came out in 1962, so I think you meant you watched the film around year 2011 (when Kritzerland issued the S&S expansion on CD).
I remember buying a mono LP of Summer & Smoke in 1988 (when I was age 21) from a used record shop. It has been my favorite Elmer B. ever since.
