A unique director from Italy who gave the horror genre some beautiful looking films and great sets, hurt at times by confusing plots[not his fault] weak dubbing.Black Sunday-60- With Barbar Steele started it all , other good ones were Black Sabbath[my personal favorite] with Karloff, Planet of the vampires[beautiful to look at] with Barry Sullivan, Hatchet for the honeymoon, Twist of the death nerve[what a plot] Lisa and the devil-[second favorite] and a bunch more in and out of the genre, He died in May 1980, the same month as Terence Fisher.Any comments on this master of color schemes.

Have only seen one of his movies, but that was Black Sunday, which I really liked and thought was terrific. Have wanted to see Planet of the Vampires for years, but it seems like it's always out-of-print or not even available for rent anywhere when I look.

I like Mario Bava very much as well. Perhaps forgotten or overlooked but it seems his films have gained more fans in the past few years probably due to their DVD releases and Bava movie scores being released by Digitmovies.

Lisa And The Devil is a favorite film along with Black Sunday and the trilogy Black Sabbath aka The Three Faces of Fear, especially the last story The Drop of Water, and of course other films.

The Carlo Savina composition used as the main theme for the original version of Lisa And The Devil is gorgeous. I believe it is available on the Digitmovies I Vampiri/Caltiki-Il Mostro Immortale CD release titled To Mirna.

To me, his most iconic is Danger: Diabolik. But that's not to say that Black Sunday, Planet of the Vampires, Black Sabbath, etc. aren't equally iconic to those who take to whatever Bava is showing us on screen. I've always loved him, but his flaws are apparent, though his influence is vast. Not unlike the great likes Howard Hawks, Orson Welles, Billy Wilder, et al.

Bava is one of the greats.

Mario Bava was a bravura cinematographer before his directing credits. I remember his use of the color red in the first HERCULES, in that sequence where Hercules encounters a priestess in a temple, and she wears a red sash that's blowing in the wind. (Either I remember that correctly, or I have a vivid imagination.... LOL)

Bava also enlivened the peplum HERCULES IN THE HAUNTED WORLD with his sense of color and lighting, so that now that is why the film is remembered.
