This is a comments thread about Blog Post: FSM Catalog—Low Quantities Report, Part 4, CD Vol. 7 (2004) by Lukas Kendall

There must be a few thousand WWII action-adventure buffs who have memorized this movie and sought out our CD after yet-another AMC viewing.

I wouldn't be surprised if Craig Spaulding has sent a lot of these to the UK, as Kelly's Heroes is one of those movies that's always on British TV (as is, somewhat less justifiably, Cliffhanger).

I remember we were given a ½” album master for Khartoum but it had the wrong tape in it (some obscure cartoon score instead).

What was this score?

I don't think I ever found out but it was one of those 1960s UA things with no strings. Dean Elliott maybe?

In all honesty, I am not a fan of re-recordings of film music—I think they are almost always dreadful and are done for financial reasons by the record companies (to have an ersatz version they can license for other media uses), not coming close to the intensity and perfection of the film versions. However, Intrada’s re-recordings of Ivanhoe, Julius Caesar and Herrmann’s Jason and the Argonauts are notable exceptions—the albums were given the time and budgets to sound like they are supposed to sound.

Hmmm....

Earlier this year, the UK magazine Cinema Retro published a 60-page special edition devoted solely to "Kelly's Heroes." SAE was wise enough to take out a full-page ad on the back cover of that issue highlighting the FSM soundtrack release of "Kelly's Heroes" and all of the other FSM World War II film scores.

Once again, very interesting notes and insight. Thanks for that, Lukas.
I am also glad to learn that several FSM CDs did sell well after all. Quite astonished (in a good way ) to read the MUTINY 3CD set sold so many copies.

My obsession to release every last Rózsa M-G-M note eventually became the 15-disc Miklós Rózsa Treasury.

At one point there were rumors about a Ben-Hur release apparently (at least partially) due to its not being in the Treasury. There have been comments about problems with the Rhino release and the MGM LPs are, insofar as I am aware, OOP. While I have the Sony Special Products CD release of the LPs, they could certainly use a lot of cleanup. The overloading mentioned in the blog post is definitely in evidence in the first LP.

The quality of former MGM record releases on FSM have been an incredible (almost unbelievable, actually) improvement over the original LP releases. It would be wonderful to have the same magic done for Ben-Hur.
