My Halloween profile tribute to the late James Bernard has just been published in the new Fall issue of "Film Music Review," the venerable on-line magazine devoted to the art of motion picture music and its composers. "Music By James Bernard: Themes For A Tapestry Of Terror," a look back at the creator of "The Hammer Sound," may be found at their web site by clicking onto the gothic musical link found below...

Steve,
I ,too, met Mr. Bernard at a FANEX and concur with your assessment of his kind and generous nature.
Your article is wonderful! Here's hoping that we might get a new recording of "Curse Of Frankenstein" and
"Horror Of Dracula" some day. Great job with honoring this fine composer. God Bless!

Yes, Jimmy was a delightful man who literally charmed everyone with whom he connected. The tone of my article was deeply influenced by his kindness, friendship, and generosity. I'm deeply indebted to you, as well, for your own lovely expression of generosity and kindness. Thank you sincerely.

Blessings,

Steve

Jimmy's music grows ever lovelier with each passing year. He remains truly one of the great unsung heroes of motion picture music, a gentle soul whose inner strength and passion served to enrich a sadly misunderstood genre, aspiring to near operatic grandeur in his artistry and devotion to his genius and craft. Your appreciation of his music would have brought him much happiness.

Wonderful, when i get a minute i will be very happy to read that article.Steve-ditto- ditto-James did a great job in music with the contrast of moody scores and lush beautiful melodies, the only regret is i wish he had done more.TCM will be showing a few of his achievements on Halloween, The gorgon, Dracula- prince of darkness, dracula has risen.

A really good article about a composer who was one of the first to get me into film music.

Steve, not only was your article a wonderful read, but your sentiment (above) was deeply moving and heartfelt. Not to mention true. Fortunately, the music will live on: think of how lucky others will be when they one day hear Bernard's exquisite music and discover what some of us already know. The man was a master. I don't know if anyone has put it like this before, but one of the things that's especially attractive about his Hammer music is that (IMO) it's a perfect fusion of Golden Age lush ornateness with Silver Age astringency and freshness. It's the best of both worlds. And it's just gorgeous. Thanks again for sharing the link to your great article.

On Halloween day, Turner Classic Movies will be screening four of Jimmy's Hammer scored films, including "The Gorgon," and "Frankenstein Created Woman." It will be great way to commemorate both the season of fright, and a frighteningly brilliant composer's memory.

Lovely article, Steve. You put into words what I always failed to express when trying to get across my appreciation of his great (see?) scores and the wonderful man behind them.

R.I.P JAMES, you made my love life so much better You brought out that through all the hardships of life, in fiction or life there is beauty and romantic interludes that keep us going, sometimes we wonder how, but it does.

Since there seems to be so much activity currently on the Hammer Music thread, and since James Bernard was the premier composer for that studio, I thought I'd take a moment to re-post this particular thread concerning Jimmy's music, life, and career.

Best Wishes for the New Year,

Steve
