oK, folks this was not meant to be The haunting The innocents, the uninvited, The changeling or many other serious after life films. William Castle was both a filmmaker and a showman. There are some blatent cheesy effects, but i still say this is one of the most fun genre film ever made. Why? because if you want to believe it or not there is so much talent in it .That happens alot my friends. The actors are perfect for the movie, the sets are fantastic, Von Dexter's music score is great, the direction is on target, the few shock scenes work and then there is the 2 greatest things in cinema history, what a plot and what plot twists it has, i once tried a experiment with first time viewers on video a few years back, i kept on stopping the film after each scene and ask who do you think is guilty and what is going on, these intelligent viewers kept on changing their answers, back and forth as the film progress.Yes one more thing, the dialogue is so sardonic, so superb, so perfect, so melodramatic,so classic.plenty of people love this film and i think like a great pop song, they love it so much they don't really think how good it really is.

Just saw this for the first time a few weeks ago, as I began exploring Vincent Price movies, and really enjoyed it. There were a couple of scares that still gave me a good jolt, the biggest being the old lady in the basement. Yikes! I don't believe Castle was out to making anything other than a fun "spooky house" movie. A horror movie review book I have sums it up best: "Nobody had any illusions about art. This is unapologetic cinematic popcorn with lots of salt and butter."

And on a tangent, after watching Strait-Jacket on TCM the other night, it's evident that William Castle was a filmmaker also capable of real, solid terror and suspense when he wanted to be.

Found my way to the official William Castle website and saw this:

"On October 31, 2011, William Castle Productions proudly presents House on Haunted Hill: A William Castle Annotated Screamplay. The book features legendary horror filmmaker William Castle's authentic working script from his 1959 classic thriller with original formatting and Castle’s own hand-written notes. This collector’s item even comes with a new twist on Castle’s famous theater gimmick, Emerg-O. The 248-page book includes a foreword by acclaimed director Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling, Matinee), hailing the book as "an important artifact." It also includes an introduction by William's daughter, Terry Castle, who shares her personal thoughts on this seminal piece of film history. A critical perspective of the film by writer and illustrator Charlie Largent is also included as well as a special welcome from William Castle himself. The Screamplay will be available in print for $24.99 via Amazon and select retailers through the recently resurrected William Castle Productions."

This is the classic haunted house movie. I've loved it ever since I saw it as a kid on TV. The closing credits for the film list "Skeleton by Himself."

Here's the trailer. Carol Omhart and Carol Craig are both great screamers.

William Castle films were the scariest things I'd ever seen when I watched them for the first time on TV at the age of 10. THE TINGLER, HOMICIDAL... they gave me nightmares for weeks, but none more so than HOUSE ON HANTED HILL. That was terribly scary for me.

Of course, nowadays when I see H on HH, I don't hide behind the sofa, but it still holds up as movie and the scares still work. And I now appreciate the tongue-in-cheek aspect (something that went over my 10-year-old head way back) as one of "showman" William Castle's trademarks.

One of my childhood favorites. My sisters and I used to watch this one eight times a week on Million Dollar Movie. My sister scared the beejesus out of me by playing the floating witch. I fell back and hit my head on the corner of a cedar chest. BLOOD! BLOOD! We never did get the stains out. And we used Bon Ami! I have a very nice original print. Still looking for a trailer.

In both this film and THE TINGLER.

Few things are funnier to me than the moment in THE TINGLER when Price takes LSD and starts getting paranoid. The pained expressions of terror on his face send me into hysterics. big grin

So I'm the only person who saw the Emergo presentation?! I saw all those Castle films during their original releases.

I saw Emergo with the floating skeleton -- fun - and I was in the audience when THE TINGLER attacked one of the audience - an electrical wired seat gave the person a small jolt.

I first saw this in the mid-sixties at a cinema that ran horror double bills on Sundays nights. I really wanted to see it after seeing stills of it in Famous Monsters Of Filmland magazine, it didn't disappoint, thanks to Vincent Price. I think the remake is a lot of fun.

After all the things that already has happened that night it is about 2 or 3'am in the morning, the group decide to go into their own rooms, each with a gun[bit they don't know the guns are filled with blanks of course the audience don't know that either[oh what a movie] As each one in beautiful movement go up the stares , into the hallway, and in great style go into their room[Von Dexter's music playing in great majestic style] as Elisha Cook enters his room, he says to the group'WHAT IS THE SENSE OF SAYING GOODNIGHT] then precedes into his room[magnificent, perfect] like members of this board, who adore the notes and chord structures of Jerry Goldsmith, the words spoken in this film is a delicacy to me.

William Castle was a genuine showman and a true entertainer. I didn't realize what a savvy director he was until I saw his stereoscopic films at the World 3-D Expos in Hollywood. His films really work on the big screen.

I use to watch his horror films on TV. Creatures Features etc. I saw both THE TINGLER and HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL in 1970, at a theater Patchogue, Long Island having a Halloween marathon. Vincent Price's old movies could still fill up a theater then, even if they were black and white. There were two other films on the bill.

In THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, every time Vincent Price mentions his wife in the narration, he ends with "-- she's so amusing." I get a kick out of the repetition of that line, "-- she's so amusing." It tells us he may have plans for her. Price is a lot of fun to watch in this film. The way his character interacts with other characters, kind of threatening but reassuring at the same time, is so amusing.

THE TINGLER and THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL look fine on the official Image DVDs.

I saw a lot of the William Castle films when they originally came out, but at a local theatre, where they didn't present them in "Emergo" or electrify anyone's seat.

I'd go to the matinee on either Saturday or Sunday, along with a whole theatre-full of screaming kids. They were really fun.

I still recall the skeleton manipulating Carol Omhart into the pool of acid, and the audience screaming, because they can see where she's headed, and she doesn't seem to know.... Wild.

(As if anyone every has a "pool of acid" in the basement of their house....)

One stylized type of shot one seems to see in all these scare films is a view of whatever building where all the action takes place, usually accompanied by creepy music. It's in HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, as well as most of the Corman Poe films that I can remember, including HOUSE OF USHER, PIT AND THE PENDULUM, MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH, and many others. This kind of shot always seems to turn up, sometimes more than once in any given film....
