In the program of a high-school student performance I went to, one young woman listed her performance in "The Vagina Monologues" at a local high school among her credits.

HUH?

This is wild. I guess I'm well and truly part of the past generation when I'm surprised at stuff like this. I'm half-certain we would have gotten dinged big-time if we'd even said the word out loud.

(Well, maybe not in real trouble, but I would have gotten the hairy eyeball at least.)

Hard to say high school years are a give and take thing, i don't know where you went to high school, but i will never forget the first week in College, which was a mere few months after high school[right?] and in one class, the teacher asks the students who have had sexual realtionships, 99% of the students raise their hands[male and female], now mind you this was in 1975, ok, which means we are talking about people who are 50 and up now, THERE IS NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN, it's life, like it or not we got to grind through it. With this statement i have nothing else to say, good luck Dave with all you do, good night goodbye, whatever.

I think it's clear that a vast number of those just raised their hand in order to not be exposed to the laughter of the others. It's called conformism.

I certainly agree it's possible, but I'd be more than a little wary of saying it's clear that's what happened (unless I knew more about the occurrence beyond the few words dan the man has shared with us).

What exactly is wrong about the word Vagina?

High School should begin to challenge young minds and in the case of females students, it is refreshing that the Vagina Monologues is added rather then all the superficial crap.

I see it as a positive step for young women and their development and to open up dialogue at that very important age is very important since it is still considered wrong for women to enjoy or explore sex as oppose to men.

Naturally, certain parts of the work are for more experienced women and truly adult but others do deal with issues that women feel from a young age.

Also, if the students are doing plays were they pretend to be adults in adult situations, I don't see why this work/play should be taboo.

As long as the language is kept decent, I support it.

Kids and adults are both good at lying.

There's nothing wrong with vaginas. The problem is that The Vagina Monologues is a (boring, IMHO, and) rather whiny piece of propaganda. School should be about providing kids with the ability to think, not the ability to think in a certain morally-tilted way (this is about left, right, whatever).

I would no more have kids using this foolishness than I would some repression-championing conservative tract.

If teachers and others are sincere about having kids know facts and information about sexual health, there are countless ways of providing that. But kids are sexualized enough, and we don't need schools advocating this sort of thing. Somehow humans have learned about sex all along, and we don't need teachers pushing their own agendas.

But the Vagina Monologues isn't really sexualized so much as it is about sex from the female perspective and yes, it is a bit slanted but considering how horrible teen and young women are shown/sexualized in the media [Teen Mom, Jersey Shore, The Kardashisians, etc] I see some value in an empowering piece of work.

I agree there are probably better choices to choose from but I think it is a piece that will draw attention for all the wrong and provocative reasons and then create a dialogue.

Yes, kids and well, EVERYONE is over exposed to sexuality but very little actual talk is about sex in a simplistic and realistic form and very little "facts" are taught.

Another sad fact is that most kids probably will experiment with sex in high school and some will not go to college so better to get them informed at that crucial time.

I find that the VAGINA MONOLOGUES provides an empowerment that most girls could use.

One person's empowerment is another's slant, though. It's a tract. I dare say if someone attempted to have high schoolers do such a play about the opposite side of the spectrum, we wouldn't be talking about this at all.

I see plenty of 'empowerment' in terms of sexuality among the high schoolers I work with. That's not the problem. Every teacher I work with or know personally--EVERY one--says the problem with schools is that the teachers don't spend their time teaching, but with 'empowerment' which is the parents's job. I also deal with kids who don't have parents who parent, but that's where the focus should be, on getting them to do their jobs. When teachers are involved in this sort of thing, teachers turn into morality instructors, and it's a road we shouldn't go down.

If you want your kid to be empowered by this, fine, you give it to them to read. It doesn't reflect every kid's morality. Kids today are engaging in oral sex, bisexuality and all kinds of stuff that, as cool as that seems to hip and progressive adults (especially those without kids, or who had repressed teen years), they are often not prepared to deal with, and it can lead to all kinds of mental and phycial issues. One issue I have to deal with daily that folks who want this stuff in the schools never seem to discuss is the amount of sexual assault that goes on in the schools.

We can say "Oh, it's always been that way" or "Sex is all around." Those are just excuses for pushing one's own view, be it wildly repressive or insanely liberal. If adults don't have cooler heads when it comes to determining this kind of material being presented in high school, then they'll have no one to blame when it's in grammar schools when they have kids--and what will high schools look like then?

I raised my hand and I was just READING the question.

"Vagina" is such a funny word. I don't think I've ever used it in an everyday conversation, although, given that my wife hates the word "c__t", when somebody annoys me I have to say "Ooh - I feel like kicking his vagina in!"

Mrs TG also hates that word, whilst simultaneously agreeing that, in respect of some people, none other will quite do.

Present company excepted...

I have to admit I couldn't make it through the video of Ensler performing it. I think it's a valid subject, and I wonder if it was perhaps the performer (I found Ensler a little angry and carnivorous) and/or the writing that made me shut it off.

Maybe somebody else needs to take a crack at the subject.

Could that be a Freudian Slip?

Aside: A long time ago I was looking for something to read and I came across a mystery novel entitled The Girl in the Freudian Slip. One of the great titles ever.

Considering how he loved to tell that 'Basic Instinct made me feel like a gynecologist' joke, maybe Jerry Goldsmith missed out on the subject for an opera.

Well, I can't find a link to it, but the local high school is doing a production of this show this week.

Yipes!
