Stu Thomas (arranger/guitarist/composer/etc who works with James) recently updated his website mentioning that they are starting work on the upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman.
A trailer was recently released, for those unaware of the project:
From the title, you might be able to surmise that the film is twist to the fairy tale, and is about a Huntsman ordered by the Evil Queen to take Snow White into the woods to be killed. It features Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, as well as Toby Jones, Ray Winstone, and others.
The trailer has horrible music selection, in my opinion. Poor Zack Hemsey has people stealing his music left and right these days. None-the-less, it's an odd choice that gave me a bad impression. The visual style, while stunning at times, has a very gritty feel. That combined with the music made me worried this would turn out like Robin Hood or something. I felt, perhaps, that the filmmakers were going to hire someone who would give them rather generic and unfantastical music that was 'aggressive' or 'edgy,' but this scoring assignment going to JNH is somewhat promising.
Here's to hoping that we can get something more along the lines of Howard's Lady in the Water than Streitenfeld's Robin Hood.
I'm looking forward to this. I hope the producers choose him because of The Last Airbender and not Green Lantern. If they ask him to write something similar to The Last Airbender I will be very happy.

The producers are Sam Mercer (Signs, Sixth Sense, Airbender, etc) and Joe Roth (Freedomland, America's Sweethearts), so they've worked with James before. If the source material is strong, I have faith that James can deliver a great score.
At first I thought this was supposed to be directed by Norwegian Tommy Wirkola (DEAD SNOW) before I realized that was a similarly-themed concept, HAND AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS.
In any case, I'd be curious to hear what JNH comes up with. Hopefully not something TOO horrorey.
According to Stuart Thomas, JNH used a full 80 voices choir so I hope it has a decent mix, unlike The Hunger Games. The CD must be 60-70 minutes long, because JNH wrote two hours of music for the movie.
Why did they record the score in L.A.? Wasn't most of the post-production work done in the UK, and wouldn't they get a tax credit for recording it there?
I guess Universal opted for the safe route, after that stink the AFM drew when Lionsgate elected to record the "Hunger Games" score in London (and that Pete Anthony did orchestrations, against union rules).
