Revisited this film recently and was reminded of how jaunty and fun Newman's score is. I'm surprised this one hasn't been released yet. I'd buy it! While we're at it, I'll take the Flintstones, too!
I love this score, it's fresh and funny, and not the silly faux-Godfather I was expecting. I hope somebody has this one in their sights, it would make a fun album.
Wouldn't mind a double feature with the (also) Andrew Bergman-directed HONEYMOON IN VEGAS.
I agree 100%. I love both scores. Seeing The Freshman in the early 90s was the first time I`ve noticed Newman`s music and I was amazed how original the music sounded. Newman really was a new voice in film scoring. And Honeymoon in Vegas with its references to Bernstein`s Grifters is fantastic too.
Unfortunately Newman`s comedy scores are a hard sell. Something I absolutely can not understand.

Maybe because so many of them are HEAVILLY temp-tracked with Danny Elfman and James Newton Howard.
I mean, I like Newman and all, but a lot of his 90's comedy scoring is way too close to the temp tracks.
- Jingle All The Way - My Father The Hero - 102 Dalmatians - Bill & Ted`s Bogus Journey - The Flintstones - The Flintstones : Viva Rock Vegas - Undercover Blues - Matilda - Nutty Professor - Nutty Professor 2
Could you please name the resp. Newton Howard or Elfman scores that match those Newman 90s scores?
And could you name some Elfman scores that come even close in terms of ideas and musical skills? I can listen to Jingle All The way all the time but I had a hard time sitting through the 8 minute suite of Scrooged on Elfman`s compilation CD the other day, since I wanted to check if I should buy the new Lalaland CD. Btw I decided not to.

I'll field this. I love Newman's music and I've noticed quite a bit of temping. Doesn't mean it bothers me. Is Powell's PAYCHECK a lesser score because it uses SIGNS at one point?
NUTTY PROFESSOR - No Howard or Elfman, but Broughton's HONEY I BLEW UP THE KID shows up to somewhat distracting effect in the main titles, as does Edelman's BEETHOVEN.
MATILDA - One of the themes is derived from Portman's A PYROMANIAC'S LOVE STORY. Also, Newman cannily appropriates brother Thomas' theme from THE PLAYER in "Hair Tonic".
I believe that Mr. Jack is thinking of TOMMY BOY which steals everything from DAVE to BACK TO SCHOOL to MRS. DOUBTFIRE. In Newman's defense, I imagine it was a rush job (note the many additional composers in the end credits) and with so little time to second guess, he was stuck.
