Funnily enough, I've been playing this a lot lately. The extras are great, but it's the heraldic main theme and lovely whale fugue that I just can't get enough of. It's fun to hear the original, unused Main Title, but I can see why it was dropped. His own theme works a million times better. The Horner-like Logo opening is especially ace. I don't own that many Rosenman scores (LOTR, the two POTA scores and his Amazing Stories & TV Omnibus contributions, I may have others and I keep meaning to pick up Prophecy and Cross Creek), but this is probably my favourite score by him. Great stuff! If Rosenman was alive and found out that some of his music was described as "Horner-like", he would probably find the person who wrote that and slice off their face. The man had no kind words for Horner at all. Oh dear! What kind of things did he say about Horner? To be fair I think he slated Williams as well!! Still, I love STIV and definitely recommend Cross Creek and Hellfighters.

If Rosenman was alive and found out that some of his music was described as "Horner-like" . . . If he realized we were talking about two chords, and that practically the same sound reoccurs at 1:23 into his own STIV:TVH track "Ten Seconds of Tension," I think he'd let it slide. (Where in all of Hornerdom do you guys recommend I listen for the exact same two chords heard in Rosenman's Paramount logo cue, BTW? --And it'll definitely sound more alike than the "Ten Seconds of Tension" cue does?)

It's not so much Horner-like, more just similar sounding to the device Horner used in his ST-II and ST-III scores. I wonder how much Rosenman's acerbic comments and blasts in his latter years were down to his dementia or alzheimer's condition, which takes root earlier than people suspect?

I can "hear the Horner" in ST IV's opening seconds. To me it plays like a momentary homage to ST III, and as such I approve whole-heartedly. After all, the story in IV follows III as not just a sequel, but a direct continuation.

He said in an interview for "Starlog" magazine that Horner had no style at all, and referred to him as "Jamie" (which Horner didn't like) in an interview for "Cinemascore".

Just listened to this disc for the first time. (Eventually got around to it!) With the excellent, dynamic and thunderous sound quality, alternates, and connecting pieces, this score is now much more compelling. Historically, I found Rosenman’s score served the film well but didn’t stand up as well on disc. Intrada’s presentation has certainly changed that and increased my appreciation of this work. Two thumbs up! Cheers Chris
