On one of the tracks there is a direct quote of Williams' 5-note mothership "motif" from CE3K. I haven't seen the film in many years... can someone tell me what was going on in that scene from 1941?
That moment of music was not used in the finished film... it was meant to accompany Ned Beatty and Toshiro Mifune each looking at the other through binoculars.
Thanks, Mike! Wedge.... I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't read the liner notes yet, because I'm so anal about keeping these things in pristine condition, I always wash my hands thoroughly, then wipe them with rubbing alcohol before reading the booklets... and I've just been too damned lazy to go through all that... but SOON!
Hey Mike... But what do Beatty and Mifune looking at each other through binoculars have to do with anything in CE3K? CE3K is one of my top-2 favorite films, and I can't remember ANYTHING in it that would lend itself to a parody in 1941!!!

Looking directly at each other through binoculars is something of a close encounter, isn't it?
It's one of those gags that seems as if it will be funny . . . until a preview audience doesn't laugh at it. So, it was easily clipped out. But it's neat that the music survives on those original session masters.
(The REALLY funny thing about it is how many times people have heard "Close Encounters" on their "1941" set, and posted questions here at the board about it before reading the liner notes.)
It was a weak joke, probably an attempt to find a place to put in some CE3K reference since there was already a reference to Jaws. And Duel for that matter.... Has anyone ever spotted a Sugarland Express reference in the film that I might have missed?
The winning CE3K joke of 1979 remains the one in Moonraker.
