This is the new film from The Orphanage director J Bayona.
I LOVED The Orphanage, film and score, and have high hopes for this film as a result.
He has re-teamed with Spanish composer Velazquez for this true-life story of the devastating tsunami that hit Asia a few years ago. Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts star.
The film sounds like an expanded version of the opening of Eastwood's recent HEREAFTER, which itself was outstanding...the prologue, I mean, not the whole film.
Here's hoping Velazquez, who recently recorded his orchestral score at Abbey Road, continues the brilliant work he has done so far.

This is definitely one of the scores I am looking forward to the most.

THE ORPHANAGE is a fantastic score and DEVIL has some killer titles music.
I'm not as aware of his lesser known Spanish scores.

I second the recommendation of his excellent Devil score (two years later I'm still humming the themes) but otherwise I also need to get better acquainted with his work.

This is one of my favorite scores of the year. I have yet to see the movie but it's on my list to go see. It opens in my city this weekend.

Here's a short little video on the music if anyone is interested.

I played this again last night and was practically moved to tears by it.
Surely one of the most beautiful scores of the past few years.
If you think current scores are dead or rubbish, HEAR THIS!
I have The Orphanage CD by Velazquez too. Are there any other scores by him in a similar vein to Impossible and Orphanage?
I have (or have heard) other scores by him (Mama, Devil, Garbo The Spy) which are impressive, but don't move me like the upper two do.
Any suggestions?

Totally agree Kevin. Brilliant score. I only discovered this summer in Quartets sale. Have heard good things about The Orphanages and would love to get that if I can find it.

Bought Hercules and its quite good with the last three tracks being superb!

Will slowly catch up with Mama etc as funds allow!

The Impossible is my favorite Velazquez score! Hercules is decent effort and I agree, the last three tracks are by far the best on the album. I hope that Velazquez gets more opportunities to score more dramas.

One thing I read in the booklet notes that tripped me up.
The director (J A Bayona) mentions being jazzed about recording the score at Abbey Road Studios in London, cos it was where his favourite film/score was done...E.T The Extra-Terrestrial.
Wasn't that score recorded in the U.S.A?
I know the ACTUAL film score was, but was the original MCA LP/CD re-recording done in London?
Anyone confirm?

I read that and thought this is wrong! The score and album were recorded in LA.

However I used to have a tape with concert suites of ET, Star Wars and Close Encounters performed by the LSO and NPO conducted by Frank Barber. It was released at around the same time so maybe he is accidentally referring to that recording?

I love this score so much I have it on both vinyl and cd. One of then most moving, beautiful and lonely scores since Let the Right One In. IMO.

I miss the James Horner that scored Dad, Batteries Not Included, Man Without a Face, Cocoon the Return, Searching for Bobby Fischer, etc. Those scores had moments that really soared when it came to the heartfelt moments. Those were the moments that cemented me as a film music fan and certainly a Horner fan.

Velazquez's The Impossible is the closest ANYONE has come to the scores mentioned above. It is truly heartbreaking, eloquent, and fits the movie to a tee. It is the best score of its kind in a long time.

Interesting that you should say this. I was listening to this score yesterday and heard touches of Horner in there....particularly a small section that he used in Braveheart (For The Love of a Princess) which he then adapted into Bicentennial Man and I think The Missing. Really emotional stuff.

I couldn't agree more with both of these comments.

I discovered this composer last year after buying The Impossible score. Just purchased The Orphanage and have ordered Mama and The Last Days.

Of all the new composers he is definitely my favourite and will be buying The Adventurer from Varese soon!!

The score to "The Impossible" is devastating.

Fernado Velazquez is a very great composer indeed.

Welcome to the Club! Velazquez is indeed very special and the score for Lo Impossible is my favorite in recent memory- up there with LET THE RIGHT ONE IN by Johan Soderqvist. Get El Maj Majeno as well!
