The new recording of Conan the Destroyer is absolutely wonderful. Great performance by the Prague orchestra and a terrific and crisp sound. How come that Conan the Barbarian on the other hand sounds so "distant"? Some of the instruments are almos inaudible. It`s the same engineer. It`s the only James Fitzpatrick/Nic Raine rerecordings that I can`t listen to. Although the Prague orchestra performs much better, I still prefer the original Varese soundtrack CD.

I can't listen to the Barbarian re-recording and it sits in my reject section. I have only the highest praise for all Tadlow's other, absolutely magnificent re-recordings, but to my ears the high level sound quality on Barbarian is cramped and edgy to an extent I can't enjoy it, even though the performance itself is fine. Haven't received my copy of the Destroyer yet. I suspect a hearing test should in order here. And perhaps a hearing aid as well for Basil... I have one other suggestion, but it's just too rude to post during the holiday season. :-) Ford A. Thaxton

Barbarian sounds more dense because that's how the score was written and orchestrated. If you compare the original recordings of both scores we can hear that Barbarian has a far bigger, more severe soundscape then Destroyer.

What YOR really disliked about the rerecording of The Barbarian is that the chorus sings something complete differente from what one hear in the original. YOR cannot understand how that come!

My guess is they sing the same words, but singers from Prague might pronounce latin differently then singers from Rome.

No, YOR read somewhere that the original lyrics were lost so they had to guess what the chorus were singing. But they did a terrible job in this guessing game, YOR sadly must say...

This is what James Fitz posted in an earlier thread; "If you read the notes carefully you will see that Basil lost the original text he used...or more likely that his Italian orchestrator, Renato Serio, used. So the text on the new recording is a combination of what little text was on the original scores, some of the text that was used for the Ubeda concert, what little my ear and schoolboy latin could detect when listening to both the soundtrack CD and to the DVD film....then with any the missing text being supplied by my ever brilliant Czech co-producer Stanjas Vomackova....who also happens to speak about 7 different langues...including classical Latin! Plus I added a wee bit of the Dies Irae to one cue...as it fitted perfectly!" Hope that the above clears up some of the mystery as to the differences in the lyrics.

And, nevertheless, they ended up singing something completely differente from the original recording... Amazing!!!!

On a sonic level, this recording is as good as anything else TADLOW has recorded. Ford A. Thaxton

I finally got my hands on these and I find them to be exceptional. I was never a devotee of the Conan scores, as much as I enjoy Basil Poledouris’ work and loved one or two cues. These recordings are just amazing and completely changed my attitude on the music. Having heard the originals as well, I totally prefer the re-recordings. Such amazing work, very full and lush. I normally prefer the original tracks if I have some attachment to them, but in this case, it’s the Tadlow discs all the way for me. Incredible work.
