THURSDAY, JANUARY 12

THE KILLING---executive producer/writer Veena Sud said Rosie's killer won't be revealed until the end of Season 2, “I wanted to tell THE KILLING with the rhythm and tones of everyday life, the hesitations, and the silences, and the not-knowing-what-to-say. The messiness and unstructured way of people who I think sometimes we aren’t encouraged to do in TV. We are encouraged to connect the dots with straight lines, and not take detours or go off in tangents that are messy and nonlinear.” She commented on the many angry fans who wanted a resolution to Rosie's murder at the end of Season 1, "This is not a committee thing."

THE TOMB---Arnold Schwarzenegger may join Sylvester Stallone in this movie about a prison designer who must escape from his own maximum security prison after he is framed and imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit.

THE LONE RANGER---James Badge Dale (THE PACIFIC, 24) is the top candidate to play the Lone Ranger's older brother. Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer star.
JAMES BADGE DALE TRIVIA---Dale's mother was Durham native and Tony-nominated actress Anita Morris.

AVATAR 2---the sequel movie has been delayed until 2016 said producer Jon Landau.

HALLE BERRY---is engaged to French actor Olivier Martinez. They starred together in DARK TIDE.

ONE HUNDRED PERCENT LUNAR BOY---movie underway based on the novel set 2,000 years in the future where a boy born on a lunar colony has the ability to see the future.

AFTER EARTH---Isabelle Fuhrman is in negotiations to co-star with Will Smith and son Jaden in this sci fi movie from M. Night Shyamalan.

HOVER CAR RACER---movie underway based on the sci fi novel set in the future about a teenage boy and his hover car racer.

NCIS---the 200th episode will be a "what if" episode. Executive producer Gary Glasberg said, The episode is called 'Life Before His Eyes.' It looks back at key moments in nine years of NCIS when decisions had to be made, and how the world would have ended up if [different decisions were made]. You're going to see old faces, familiar faces, faces people maybe never expected to see again. It was a lot of fun." Michael Weatherly said the "what if" episode has him meeting Ziva for the first time under different circumstances, “For the first time, I didn’t know what was going to happen [in a scene]. I literally had to concoct in my mind seven years of ‘What if there was no Ziva in Tony’s life, how would he have been different?’” And Cote de Pablo did same. “The character that she brought into the room was so different from her normal Ziva." The 200th episode also Gibbs in the diner getting his usual cup of coffee when a hooded stranger with a gun approaches him. As Gibbs raises his gun, there is a gunshot.

Cant wait for The Killing to return. What a fantastic series.

Agreed, even if it was frustrating that the killer wasnt revealed at the end of the first season. But I certainly will return for season 2!

What I dont get is..., despite ones opinion of Lost as a whole, Season 1 was generally considered fantastic by the majority. It even won the Emmy. But THOSE people didn't get all bent out of shape when they didn't reveal what was in the hatch at the finale. I think if one liked The Killing all season... as a lot did, why become such haters?

Fascinating show - I was about to order the Blu-ray when I found out it was based on a 2007 Danish series - knowing how these things go, instead I bought the Danish series - this particular story lasts 20 episodes and, of course, the killer is revealed (actually at the end of episode nineteen). Veena Sud is more than a little disingenuous, talking about the nature of the show as if it were hers. First off, the Danish series is fantastic up through episode fifteen, at which point the mechanics of it start to seem a bit frayed - by the reveal there have been so many red herrings it's not even funny. The last five episodes are very well done and the fact that they're not as fresh as the first fifteen didn't stop me from enjoying them, although it was a bit of a letdown.

I've now seen the first two episodes of The Killing - American Style. As always, nothing they've changed is for the better, and frequently the little changes are horrible - what is subtle and affecting in the Danish, becomes melodramatic and a little crass in the American. Also, the character of the new detective is the worst of the "adjustments" - his character in the Danish is more complex and occasionally truly off-putting - here he's like some Keith Carradine clone and kind of a nerdy buffoon - hopefully that aspect will disappear at some point.

The filming style is very much aping the original Danish - when I heard the music I could not believe they were doing the Danish music almost note for note until the end credits came up and I found to my astonishment that they're USING the Danish music by Frans Bak.

The main titles are very different and not for the better - these are Fincher-like "hip." Finally, I found it completely nauseating that the pilot episode did not even acknowledge the original show. The episode that follow does (based on the Danish series Forbrydelsen) thankfully.

The dialogue in the American is pretty bad. The cast is nowhere near as good as the Danish version, most especially in the case of the leading lady. The Danish actress, Sofie Grabol is amazing, just perfect - again a very complex character that Grabol plays magnificently. The American actress is just like every other and therefore not so interesting to me.

For anyone who's enjoying this knock-off, I highly recommend trying the original.

I very much want to see the original, but having trouble finding it short of importing a Region 2 version. Is it available to stream on Netflix or on Region 1 dvd?

The first fifteen episodes are absolutely riveting TV - just amazing stuff. And the wrap-up, while a bit of a disappointment for me, is still head and shoulders above anything done here. I got the region two DVDs, which are wonderful. Season two, a whole new case, is on its way to me now.

Ok, I'm sold. Where do you usually buy your region 2 dvds? Amazon UK?

Oh, and Bruce, have you seen Breaking Bad?
