For me, it was JAWS. The first time I ever went to see a movie specifically because I heard and liked the theme song on the radio. First time I ever *heard* a movie theme on the radio.

Of course it ruined scuba diving for me ever since. I just knew - and know - that if I ever saw a shark I'd panic and kill myself before the shark had a chance to eat me.

I didn't know who he was yet, but when I was six years old, I remember humming the "Luke Skywalker" theme from "Star Wars" (the movie we'd seen earlier that day) in bed. It was many years later when I learned:

[1] It was called the "Luke Skywalker" theme,

[2] I had the rhythm wrong, and

[3] John Williams wrote it . . .

. . . and "Close Encounters" and "Superman" and "Raiders" and "E.T." and many other favorites over the years.

As we say in Yiddish . . . (okay, my Yiddish is rusty, so in English this time) . . .

"UNTIL A HUNDRED AND TWENTY, JOHNNY!!!"

80 years? "Still so young is he?" Yoda would say.

Just bought "TinTin" yesterday to honor him. Have never listened to it.

Same Here. I'd forgotten how good You Are The Pan is.

I'd hoped some of the labels would announce something to celebrate this momentous occasion, perhaps a Varese Club DVD of the Williams Fimucite concert, etc. Perhaps there's still a chance?

You Are The Pan is classic Williams!

Superman started it all for me and i still think this is the greatest score of all time!

Happy 80th birthday Mr Williams! Here is to 80 more!

Happy Birthday to the man who has brought us so many emotions in the last 50 years : elation, awe, fear, terror, bliss, exhilaration, thoughtfulness.....the list goes on and on.
The Spielberg/Williams collaboration is one for the history books !
(I believe people when they say that great composers of the past such as Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner... would surely have teamed up with famous directors, had they lived in our time)

We're lucky to have John Williams, who so inherently understands the link between sight & sound
and made our movie-going experiences timeless memories.

PS : As for 'You are the Pan', i wouldn't call it classic Williams since the scene was so obviously temp-tracked with Delerue's Agnes of God ...maybe Mr Spielberg & Williams wanted to pay homage to the french composer... it's a very effective piece of music nonetheless !!!

Happy 80th Birthday Monsieur Williams! You're the reason I got into film soundtracks and, latterly, classical music! Your music means the world to me (heck I know he's not reading this but......!) and has accompanied me throughout most of my childhood, through my teens, and to the ripe 'old' age of 38! Long may you continue to score!

- J

Anyway, have all day tomorrow to celebrate further born 2/8/32.

Probably CE3K, Patriot and perhaps Tintin plus others.

Then I think the late Jerry Goldsmith's birthday is a few days away.

Many thanks Judy for this thread. Yesterday we celebrated in France the "souvenir" of François Truffaut - who passed away many years ago. He would have turned 80! I listened to LES DEUX ANGLAISES ET LE CONTINENT.

Tomorrow - well, here in France it's already February 8th! - i still don't know what i will listen to : there are so many compositions i'm fond of! I'll make my mind up!

I join the celebration and wish he would do the score for a contemporary action movie during 2012. I'm curious to hear what he comes up with.

Along with Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams is the reason I got into film scores in the first place, as is obviously the case with many of a certain age it seems. That late-70s/early-80s Williams era is quite possibly the greatest era of any composer, or at least living composer. Although I'm ashamed to admit I don't have that many Williams scores in my collection, I will nevertheless be spinning my favorites tomorrow to mark the occasion.

Really looking forward to his Lincoln score later this year.

One of many, many, many people here and elsewhere wishing Jonathan Towner Williams many happy returns of the day! (But what's he going to listen to? More likely Brahms or Walton than Jessie J or Nicki Minaj, I suspect.)

Since when is his first name Jonathan? I've never heard that before...
