It has been a John Williams filled week with the music from Superman, The River, War horse, Adventures of Tintin, The Phantom Menace and E.T. all gracing my ears on the hour long car journey to work!
Now playing The Cowboys and as I am on holiday tomorrow I plan to have a full day of Williams music! May even watch that fantastic Documentary and Concert feature on the E.T 20th Anniversay DVD!
Anabel, I celebrated M. Truffaut's birthday as well and watched Day for Night, Shoot the Piano Player and Stolen Kisses. I regret that he did not live to be 80
Top notch selection Judy! And STOLEN KISSES is my favorite Antoine Doinel's picture because of Charles Trenet's song and - most of all - that magic last sequence with the confession from this unknown man :

And back to this thread, this is how i celebrated 80th John Williams' anniversary :
This rocks! My parents have an LP with music that doesn't feature in the Varèse CD. And - that's quite odd - my dad told me that music from the CD doesn't feature in the LP either! Anyway, it would have been easier to pick up a STAR WARS cue or an INDIANA JONES cue - RAIDERS OF THE LOST RAK was the first LP i bought with my own pennies. But this score is a gem and i just love the movie, so today i listened to this CD!

I love that man who follows Christine. For I am definitive. I hate the provisional (this is the English subtitle).
When I'm happy... When I'm sad... When I'm lonely... When I'm filled with anticipation for something big or small in my everyday life...
I hum the "Raiders March"! It helps. On every occasion. It fits. Somehow it does. Magic? Of course! And this is just an example, a tiny part of that magician's impact in my life!
Beautifully said, JohnnyG! That's why I love JW's music...it is pure magic...and on a very consistent basis I might add through a very long career. And still going strong! How many composers can do that? None that are living, that's for sure.
I will commemorate this day by ripping off the shrink wrap of Warhorse and giving it a spin. Have heard it's a good one from the film music community.

This is so very cool and adorable I'm borrowing it to post on FB. I love that this kid looks all of 16 and is gushing over an orchestral composer old enough to be her great grandfather.
And you're right that she's expressing what we all feel. John Williams is made of awesome!
I was born in 1978, so I grew up with Star Wars, E.T., Indiana Jones, and Superman. All of them constantly playing on the VHS or *gasp* VideoDisc (movies on LP?!). When I was a bit older, Star Wars was the first soundtrack score I bought. I have since collected most of what's available of John Williams' film music and listen often. He is the artist with most selections on my iPod and in my iTunes and far and away the one who dominates my CD collection. I'm very thankful for the man and his music and I want to join in this thread and offer my own wishes for a very happy birthday and many more brilliant compositions! To John!

Happy 80th Birthday John(ny) Towner Williams. I first became aware of fine your work from your main title to "Kraft Suspense Theatre", the scores for "Lost In Space" and the main title song to "Fitzwilly (Make Me Rainbows)" (with lyrics by Marilyn and Alan Bergman). You are a survivor!!!
Mr. Williams' work first enthused me about soundtracks before I knew who he was, with the themes for LOST IN SPACE, TIME TUNNEL, and LAND OF THE GIANTS when I was just a tot; his music in POSEIDON ADVENTURE, EARTHQUAKE, and TOWERING INFERNO when I was a kid; his theme from JAWS as a young teen.
Then came STAR WARS, and I was buying all the scores I could find, and discovered this John Williams had composed music that I noted my whole life to that point.
Between then and now, he has continued to underscore the films that have entertained me, and composed music I continue to note and enjoy; thank you Maestro, have a happy birthday, and here's to many more!
