You pretty much need a tot of something to make coffee drinkable. The whipped cream helps, too

One time that coffee alone simply doesn't work is when you have a cold or flu. It irritates that.

On the rare occasion that I have cold or flu, coffee isn't something I crave. Even if one is caffeine dependent, the illness seems to put a block up on that craving during the duration of the cold.

One of my favorite holiday beverages is one I first encountered at the Hamburger Hamlet, now defunct, and which I now prepare at home. Operating on the basic Irish coffee principal, it comprises hot coffee (of course), Bailey's Irish Cream, and Grand Marnier, topped off, naturally, with whipped cream.

You're welcome!

The addition of the Grand Marnier sounds great; I'm going to try that. Thanks, Preston.

I now consider Irish Coffee the official "relaxing" beverage of FSMers who enjoy the finer things in existence.

Remember having these a lot at the end of meals during the mid 80s - the old double cream poured onto the spoon - as mentioned higher up in the thread - into the sugared coffee. The common one back then was with Cointreau.
I used to prefer the plain filter coffee with the cream - without the alcohol.
And getting a white moustache when you drunk it!!

Irish Coffee is one of the few drinks in which I actually add something to my coffee. In my early coffee-drinking days--not that long ago, actually--I only put a small amount of cream and sugar in, but when I found myself out of both one day, I drank the coffee black and found that there wasn't all that much difference! However, as others have pointed out, Irish Coffee is a special occasion; one that warrants those lovely added extras (especially the whiskey).
