I've had the tape (yes, tape) of Howard Shore's "The Fly" OST for so long now...don't really know why I never upgraded to CD but thanks to eagle-eyed bod going round Family Dollar store picking up stuff for me, am glad to have the CD now...but of course, I knew that there were some problems.

Some tracks repeated in the movie, odd string chords appearing from nowhere, tracks mixed together where they shouldn't be, and - I actually hate to say it - but catastrophic sequencing! I mean...it just makes no sense whatsoever...it doesn't even work as a listening experience, I simply don't understand it....SO - finally did something about it. It's not complete - not all the music is on the CD, and getting some of those single string chords or brief segements of other cues - well, it can be done but is it worth it for a bunch of 10-second snippets? I think not, if I'm honest. There is one cue that I'm sad doesn't appear on the CD, but c'est la vie. I'm hoping this amazing score gets the full treatment by one of the big labels one day - will leave it up to them to make the perfect version wink

If you're going to do this along with me - we need to start by mucking around with a couple of tracks. I use Audacity - I'm sure if you're playing along with this then you have your own favourite program too.

Will start with Tracks 15 (The Stairs) and 16 (The Fingernails). I'm assuming that all Fly CD's are exactly the same in that there is a tiny bit of bleed from one track to another i.e. starting track 16 I can still hear the final quarter-second or so of 15. So - joined these together in Audacity and split them at the correct point. Simples!

On to Track 20 - The Maggot/Fly Graphic - this needs splitting at around the 40-second mark (there is a lengthy silence to make it easy for you....I wonder why they were joined in the first place?) to make 2 new tracks called - funnily enough - "The Maggot", and "Fly Graphic".

Now the even easier bit!! Tracks Need to go in the following order:

New track number is at beginning, old track number is in brackets after the track name.

1. Main Title (1)
2. Baboon Teleportation (17)
3. Steak Montage (19)
4. Success With Baboon (21)
5. Particle Magazine (10)
6. Seth Goes Through (6)
7. Ronnie Comes Back (7)
8. Seth And The Fly (9)
9. The Street (14)
10. Plasma Pool (2)
11. The Armwrestle (11)
12. The Stairs (15)
13. Ronnie's Visit (13)
14. The Fingernails (16)
15. Fly Graphic (New Track - second half of 20)
16. The Phone Call (5)
17. The Maggot (New Track - first half of 20)
18. The Last Visit (3)
19. Brundlefly (12)
20. Stathis Enters (4)
21. The Jump (8)
22. The Ultimate Family (22)
23. The Creature (18)
24. The Finale (24)

Then, if you want, you can shove Brian Ferry on the end!

As far as track 23 - "The Creature" is concerned, the track actually ends at the moment that Brundelfly disappears along with half of the teleporter. The rest is tracked in from earlier cues. I must admit I was slightly disappointed with this (although it still makes for a good listening experience when it transitions to the Finale). So, I had a look to see what I could do:

Take 3 tracks - we'll need Plasma Pool, The Last Visit, and The Creature.

1) Plasma Pool - cut out and discard the first 1 minute and 5 seconds, and copy/paste the rest so it fades in quickly at about the 2 minute and 4 second mark of The Creature. Your new track should be about 2 minutes 53 seconds.

2) The Last Visit - cut out and discard the first 40 seconds - and copy and paste the rest with a quick fade in to about the 2 minute 47 mark of what you made in 1).

This will give you about a 4-minute 32-second new version of "The Creature" - which is not exactly the same as the film version - there's an extra loop or two in there - but it's a hell of a lot closer and - for me at least - rounds of the album nicely before the thundering Finale. The transitions from one track to another are covered by sound effects in the movie, but I got to a point where I was happy with what I ended up with.

Hope this is not repeating stuff from elsewhere, but if it is then, well, I had fun going through this great movie once again anyway, and listening in a lot more depth to what i think is one of the greatest horror-movie scores, to one of the greatest horror movies, of all time.

I think I know the cue you're talking about that was "sadly missing". I know this b/c that's the cue I eagerly wanted to hear outside the film before purchasing the cd. It was the cue to the scene where Veronica left Brundle's place after a romantic night. And her ex-boyfriend Stathis (while sitting in his car) is watching her as she leaves. That music that plays as Veronica amiles as she's about to leave is very romantic and captufes the romance between her and Seth. But is that the cue you're talking?

That's the one...kind of a shame but hey, I can live without it smile

It's actually quite "Clean" in the movie - very little in the way of sound going on during that cue...when I become bothered about it I might see if I can get a clean rip of it....but that creates all sorts of other problems (I'll be taking it from a R2 DVD).

The tracked in cues for the finale always bothered me (although they work extremely well) - it's very unlike Cronenberg and Shore to take that sort of approach. I wonder what the underlying reasons were?

Don't know - but I will say that I'd never actually noticed despite the many dozens of times I've watched this movie...I'd noticed the themes repeating (especially the Plasma Pool bit) but it had never occurred to me that it might even be the same cue. Nevertheless, dramatically it is superb and fits like a glove - one might almost suggest that the cues were written for this section and actually then tracked in to the earlier parts of the film rather than the other way around.
