This is an upcoming, Norwegian film -- the most expensive of all time -- recounting the adventurous journeys of our famous explorer Thor Heyerdahl (one of my childhood heroes).

Looks very lavish and 'Hollywood', so I have high expectations.

Same goes for the score. Bjerknes is one of the few fulltime film composers in Norway (with whom I had a nice lunch a few years back), so it should be good. He also scored Norway's last 'biggest budget of all time' film, the WW2 epic MAX MANUS from a couple of years ago.

[Edit: Bjerknes has since been replaced with Johan Söderqvist]

Anyways, I felt it needed its own thread, and here's the trailer. Looking forward to the score as well:

This looks excellent! Thanks for that, Thor. I hadn't heard about this...now I'm really looking forward to it!
I was extremely taken with Thor Heyerdahl after I read his books back when I was in High School (many many moons ago). I read "Kon-Tiki", "Aku Aku", and "The Ra Expeditions" and also saw the Kon-Tiki Documentary film. Real imagination-freeing material.

It's serendipity that this is coming out now because I just recently had a memory-trigger about Thor Heyerdahl and dragged out my old paperack copies of the books after having not thought about him for years. The trigger was seeing Christopher Heyerdahl in the US TV Western HELL ON WHEELS. The name made me look him up on IMDB wondering if he was related. He is...Christopher's father is a cousin of Thor.
He's a very striking-looking guy and a good actor...been around for years but I just never saw any of the movies and TV shows he was in before.
His character on HELL ON WHEELS is Norwegian and there is a running joke that all the locals keep calling him "The Swede"...to which he kind of wincingly replies "I'm Norwegian" to the blank looks of the locals.

Yeah, Heyerdahl is an excellent actor....love his work on SANCTUARY! But I didn't know he was related to Thor. Interesting.

The old KON TIKI documentary you mention, from 1950, is actually the only Norwegian film -- EVER! -- to get an Oscar.

I also like the the documentary series THE KON TIKI MAN from 1993, which featured a brilliant score by Ragnar Bjerkreim, especially the memorable main theme (sadly, I couldn't find a clip of it on youtube).

I remember watching this and loving the music.Luckily it came out on the BBClabel (I think). As a result I hunted down about 3/4 others by Bjerkreim, which are also quite good.

I hope this film will make it to German cinemas as well, I'm definitely interested to see it. The kiss underneath the waterfall was a bit too much "Hollywood" for my tastes, and having Thailand stand in for Polynesia is a bold move. But having such an epic adventure retold on the big screen sounds like a fun time at the cinema. I only wonder if the film will acknowledge that Heyerdahl was mostly wrong when it came to his theories, i.e. how much of a reverential "heroic tale" it will be.
In respect to the film's music, this really looks like a golden opportunity for a big score!

This looks great. I love that book. Thor, you better give some Les Baxter records to that composer to ensure that he'll get it right. wink

So the big question is:

Will there even be a score CD for it?

Always difficult to say for Norwegian films, which hardly ever get soundtrack releases. But maybe we'll see a repeat of Bjerknes' last score, MAX MANUS, which was released by Moviescore Media. We can hope.

Sadly, it was digital only.

It was. But certainly better than nothing.

I've actually 'transformed' in recent years. I now download quite a bit of digital files instead of CD's. Never thought it were possible if you'd asked me a few years ago, but there you are. Times change, and so do I.

Good for you. I'm not there yet, I need a physical product.

Thanks to Film Music Reporter.

Johan Söderqvist will be recording his orchestral score for the epic drama Kon-Tiki this weekend at Abbey Road Studios in London. The film directed by Espen Sandberg & Joachim Rønning (Bandidas, Max Manus) marks Norway’s most expensive feature film to date and tells the story of Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl’s voyage on a balsa-wood raft across the Pacific Ocean in 1947. Heyerdahl and his crew traveled across open sea to prove his scientific theory that the Polynesian people originally came from Peru in South America. The film’s cast includes Pål Sverre Hagen, Agnes Kittelsen, Odd-Magnus Williamson, Tobias Santelmann, Donald Baasmo Christiansen, James Oftebro and Gustaf Skarsgård and Søren Pilmark. Jeremy Thomas (The Last Emperor, A Dangerous Method, Sexy Beast) and Aage Aaberge (Strings) are producing the Nordisk Film Production project. Petter Skavlan has written the screenplay. Kon-Tiki is to premiere on August 19 as the opening film of the Norwegian Film Festival and will be released in theaters later that month in Norway. No word yet on a domestic distribution deal for the film.

As previously reported, Söderqvist who is best known for scoring such films as Let the Right One In, After the Wedding and In a Better World also has the romantic comedy Love is All You Need directed by Susanne Bier and starring Pierce Brosnan coming up. The film has just recently been picked up for domestic distribution by Sony Pictures Classics. No release date has been announced yet.

I hope this gets distribution in the UK. I've always been interested in Thor Heyerdahl's adventures.

Thor probably forgot to give him those Les Baxter exotica albums, as I instructed.

Is this out yet? Has anyone seen it? Any plans for a US release?

Unfortunately, the trailer makes it look like a parody of a Hollywood blockbuster, but given the subject matter, I may make an exception and see it if I can.

The film premieres August 24th in Norway. I'm not sure about the international schedule.

Have you seen the new trailer, Onya? Warning: it reveals quite a lot of plot points (but if you know the real-life story, it's not that bad):

That trailer is better than the first. Boy, they really capture the look, don't they? I do hope this gets a US release. This is will look amazing on the big screen.
