I too find a great deal to enjoy in all of these animated Horner scores, to various extents. Without sounding repetitious, they all sound similar in a positive way - namely is orchestration (full orchestra w/ ethereal choir, with solos given to tuba and harpsichord, playful woodwinds and light/keyboard percussion). They're all performed by the LSO, recorded and mixed (by the same crew, I assume?) in a very similar fashion, etc. I'd say WILLOW started the above trend(s) and then it simply spilled over, very prominently, into his animated works shortly thereafter.

THE LAND BEFORE TIME is simply incredible. It's so rare to find a score with so few flaws. I'm probably in the dark here, but ONCE UPON A FOREST just amazes me, especially the opening Forest cue. WE'RE BACK is a fun score, though not very memorable for me. THE PAGEMASTER bored me somehow, and I've yet to listen to AN AMERICAN TAIL, though parts of FIEVEL GOES WEST are a total blast! I'm currently revisiting BALTO and I'm really enjoying it. Very moving! I know Horner uses the same old devices for all these movies - the LSO, bombastic action music, comic tuba solos, emphasis on jazz, bassoon, mallet percussion, etc. but it works so well and it's tons of fun. You have to admire that even if he's borrowing from others, he's writing it all down himself and it's not easy. Same can be said for his non-animated children's films! Can you imagine if he was approached by pixar at some point? I miss his comedy scores.
