I thought about putting this in the non-film score area, but since it concerns the upcoming FSM event/Williams bowl concert, I decided to put it here. Anyways, as I just said in Peter's thread, I've decided to come. I've never even been to the US before, much less LA, so I have a ton of questions. I'll use this thread to post some as I think of them. Feel free to add your own questions. So.....here are some immediate ones I can think of: 1. I don't like driving and will try to use public transportation as much as possible. How's the connection from LAX to downtown LA? Would I be OK to use the metro and busses during my entire stay? 2. Any recommended areas for hotels? Is there an area that is close to the Bowl as well as where the FSM gathering is supposed to be? 3. Any recommended hotels? Should be cheap...I'm thinking about $500-$550 maximum from August 28th to September 3rd (6 nights). 4. I have about a week after the weekend to explore other areas nearby LA. What/where would you recommend? Should I rent a car for this or can I still get around with bus, train etc.? 5. Single tickets to the Bowl are released mid May. Is there any way to order before? What's the price, usually? And how's the seating? OK, that's for starters. I'll do research on my own too, but it's nice to ask you locals.

Thor, I live about twenty minutes from downtown by car. If you need a place to crash for a day or even more, I've got plenty of room, extra car, and plenty of good Italian food. Be my guest. Seriously.

Whoa! That's mighty nice of you, Eugene! Maybe I'll follow up on that offer, once things are settling a bit. I can help you save some money. I'm retired and have nothing but time on my hands. Love to show you the sights.

Just to be clear, when you say the FSM event, you mean the Fans of Film Music event, FFM, correct? I've kind of branched off from what the inspiring Lukas Kendall did in 2008 and 2009. Lukas you started this all!

I'm sure that's what Thor's talking about. I'll probably be able to go to your event this year, too, Pete. Just want Thor to feel welcome and comfortable if he does come all the way to Los Angeles.

4. I have about a week after the weekend to explore other areas nearby LA. What/where would you recommend? Should I rent a car for this or can I still get around with bus, train etc.? Thor, it's going to be very difficult for you to get around Southern California without a car but if you are interested in orange county- you can take the train to either downtown fullerton or anaheim. Honestly, for only 6 days, there should be PLENTY in LA to keep you busy. I don't knowm uch about LA's metro but I've heard that it takes longer for people to wait for the metro and stop at all the places from Pasadena to USC than just driving. LA is not known for reliable public transportation. the only reason I would suggest Orange County is if you wanted to do Disneyland or wanted to hit newport beach and do a newport harbor cruise. They show you all the huge rich movie star houses and yachts- its fun times, but hardly the best thing SoCal has to offer. if you do decide you want to check out OC for whatever reason, i am happy to give you a ride around there. There's a Marriot (I think its a Marriot) at the Hollywood and Highland mall - you can take a shuttle or walk to the hollywod bowl from there. I usually stay there when I go to the hollywood bowl because it gets pretty late- I'm guessing its double your price range though. (I've never personally paid to stay there) There may be something cheaper in a similar area. As I recall, the FFM events have been closer to Burbank which is definitely not walkable from Hollywood, I don't know about public transit between those areas. Everything (food, entertainment, bars) is going to be more expensive in downtown, so it really just depends what you want to do with your down time and how much you want to spend.

I attended the John Williams concert last august & I'm from the UK! Get a shuttle service (Blue/red van) to your hotel from LAX. I stayed at the Holiday Inn cahunga Blvd just a mile away or so from the bowl. Or if u are really on a budget take the HOLLYWOOD HOTEL - basic but its only to sleep! Hire a car to get around if u like or make some friends here - the forum who can take u around or depending on your travel destination take a taxi! Metro can be a good idea but I avoided it last as there were a shooting and stabbing on it! Or definately take Eugene up on his offer! Welcome 2 LA!

Metro can be a good idea but I avoided it last as there were a shooting and stabbing on it! I may have to rethink that, then. As an LA resident and occasional Metro user, I'd echo what Henry said, Thor. Don't be scared of the Metro rail system. It's clean, relatively safe, and cheap. Story about the crime statistics here: http://bit.ly/GH86C9 Buses I don't know so much about, out here, but they are cheap and more connected than the subway rail system. It's not like London, Paris or NY -- if you rely on public transport in LA, you will find yourself transferring between trains and buses to get across town: http://www.metro.net/ Taxis are very expensive, a last resort if you get stranded, but there are shuttle services like this one that I sometimes use for airport runs: http://www.supershuttle.com/ or the LAX Flyaway bus, which is great value, and can bring you into town to a limited number of drop-off sites: http://www.lawa.org/welcome_lax.aspx?id=292 Hope to meet you while you're out here.

James Southall, if you're reading, are you coming to LA alone? If so, perhaps we could hook up and rent a car together? I am coming! But I will be with the missus so we'll probably be doing our own thing most of the time, day of the concert excepted. I will certainly be hiring a car though so I'm sure we can share transport to any things we both do.
