Interesting little video that shows Elmer Bernstein's music tracked with a few cut scenes considered to morbid and graphic for the film. Some static animation cells provide the visuals.

I haven't gotten into this release the way I did the Varese re-recording.
I guess the ebb and flow of the old LP/CD got too set in my brain.
I keep meaning to return to it to see if I can edit a more playable programme of highlights.
Although not quite the let-down the Ghostbusters score album was to me, this also hasn't set my world alight.

Are there any super-fans of this score, or Elmer B, who know how to re-create the Utah Symphony re-recording CD order from the Intrada release.
I know it wouldn't be exact cos of the tweeks Elmer made for the re-do version, but a close approximation would suffice (I know track 14 - Second Chase - begins things).
Cheers smile

Not taking into account the tweeks Bernstein made at the Utah sessions as you put it, a reordering of the film tracks into something resembling the Utah recording would follow thus:

Track 14 (Second Chase)
Track 2 (Dalben and the Warrior)
Track 20 (Morva)
Track 5 (Gurgi)
Track 8 (The Horned King)
Track 11 (Eilonwy)
Track 17 (Whirlpool)
Track 18 (Fairfolk)
Track 3 (A Special Pig and a Vision)
Track 4 (Journey)
Track 24 (Confidence)
Track 25 (Cauldron Born)
Track 32 (End Titles)

I may do another post of this that does take the tweeks into account.

Thanks Tack smile

Even listening to the tracks on the Intrada CD that I know from the Varese issue can be a bit jarring...just the differences in tempo, pitch, orchestration...even the mix!
There's certainly a dynamic punch to the Varese CD somewhat missing from the Intrada.
All those years getting used to the Utah Symphony performance takes some undoing!!
I do like some of the new unreleased tracks on the Intrada release, but I don't see me ever getting over the re-recording as a favourite.
Having said that, Gurgi Lives is very lovely and welcome!

Still hoping in a future re-relase of this OST from the original STEREO master tapes (I'm sure them exist: there are the recording session from year on the internet).
This new 24 tracks mix by Disney / Intrada is quite a mess and very different from the original film score.
The same hope for another completely wrong remixed score: Conan the Barbarian. It needs a new cd release with the genuine original stereo mix.

I was listening to this score yesterday, and there was this consistent "electronic woodchipper" sound going through almost every track. It wasn't my player or headphones, because I'm listening to another album right now with no problems. Anyone else having this glitch? The disc looks pristine to my eyes.

Remixes from 24 tracks will rarely be identical to previous stereo mixes - too many micro variables to adjust. But usually they have the advantage of offering superior sound quality and additional details. If done with care by someone familiar with the music they can be great.

But I agree that some of these have been hit and miss. I do not have a problem with The Mummy, for example. I also like Condorman and Black Cauldron, but confess I'm not very familiar with these two out of the álbuns. Conan sounds a bit flat and less powerful with some once prohiminent instruments more in the background.

Psycho II is one of my favourite releases ever from Intrada but the mix has its problems (the piano that is the driving sound of that score is a bit low in the mix - compare tracks like Its Not Your Mother or the End Title from the album with the complete CD - while the synths are a bit too much pushed to up - becaming a even a bit distracting in the midle of the End Title). But I still love it.

Warlock on the other hand is fantastic in Its new mix.

Listened to my disc in my PS3, which at first gave me an error message, and then started playing it...with the same infuriating "dit-dit-dit" running under every track. I think I have a glitched copy. frown

I doubt Intrada would offer a replacement program six years after the fact, so this is sucky news. This may be the first disc I've ever owned that has "gone bad" on me, and after barely half-a-dozen spins!

I would contact Intrada. They have impeccable customer service from my experience.

Sent them an e-mail, and they said that, due to the album being OOP, they couldn't offer a replacement.

Spinning this now, what does the track "Morva" remind me of. Is that some kind of traditional music, or was it tracked from something else? Kinda reminds me of something from Kiki's Delivery Service.

While we're at it, he borrowed from Rite of Spring too in Cauldron Born.

Been giving this a spin myself. Can’t answer as to any similarities between the Morva cue and Kiki as I am not familiar with that score, though I will say that this is far from the only score that borrows from Rite of Spring (Goldsmith noticeably does so during the Moving Day cue of Secret of NIMH).

On a somewhat related note, a few months ago, a bunch of storyboards from the film turned up online which give a little more insight as to what got cut. What was most intriguing from those storyboards was that the scene “Incantation” was supposed to underscore was actually in the film this whole time, but at an earlier point than intended (the new score can be heard during “Journey.”). Someone actually made a few videos using the boards to demonstrate how the scenes would have played out as well as highlighting bits of score that ultimately got dialed out (though he unfortunately seems to look at the unmentionable as a legitimate source).

I've never detected "Rite of Spring" in NIMH, though I swear it appears in half the scores I do listen to! Thanks for the YT links, awesome stuff. There's actually a lot of interesting videos on that users page. I don't know where he got some of that stuff! Like an unedited version of the Hell Hound sequence from "All Dogs". I didn't know there was differences between the American and Canadian versions of "Rock and Rule".

I checked out the link hollywoodvegas gave for the Avatar cd, and happened to find the Disney Music Emporium is selling the Black Cauldron for only $9.98. It looks like it is the same program from the Intrada release. In fact, minus the Intrada logo, this cd looks identical to the Intrada release. https://www.disneymusicemporium.com/product/XVCD15/the-black-cauldron-cd?cp=81712_82050 Definitely worth getting for those who missed it.

Checking my copy now for signs of wood mulching equipment noises....

1st track ok.

Seems fine. What a relief! I love 80s Elmer!

This was the first score of his I purchased, albeit the Varese re-recording, which I quite a nice and well-performed summation of the score. It was also one of the first Varese CDs I purchased back in the late 80s.

Last one to check for today is Gremlins.
