I think that while L'AFRICAIN certainly is not avantgarde nor subtle, it is a thoroughly entertaining and old-fashioned 45 minutes album (additionally, the CD also includes a new 15 minute suite representing key works from the Delerue/de Broca collaboration) of pure listening pleasure. Some might find it a tad bit kitschy, and it is certainly far from showing any signs of irony or distance from the subject. Delerue composed an unabashedly and seriously romantic score featuring a very catchy main title theme that resembles a small set of Africa picture postcards from another time. It is a great listening experience (even on repeated plays) if you are willing to accept its premise: Indulging in in a picture book idea of Africa can be much pleasure.

sorry, this duplication messages was due my internet connection About L'Africain I loved the the love theme, very beautiful and very inspired and with personality, about the whole score I think is a standard Georges Delerue score
I like "Topaz" - the score. The Russian march is excellent, the themes of the dramatic score are fine. I feel the score works quite well within the movie. But the movie is a stinker that remains stinking on TV, even today after more than forty years.
Just took delivery of L'Africain (together with some other Delerue CDs)...WOW! Love this CD. the Main Theme is gorgeous a la typical Delerue style.
For years I ignored this composer...I was hooked on typical Hollywood composers. Glad that I eventually woke up a couple of years ago. A Master (or should that be Maestro!) of Melody!
And the bonus track 'Suite Symphonique de Broca' is truly fabulous. A 17 minute suite of themes from several movies in which Delerue collaborated with Broca is beautifully played by the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Hernando Rico (a name that was unknown to me before hearing this recording) with solo pianist Raymond Alessandrini.
I highly recommend this CD to all but in particular to those who may have let Delerue pass them by heretofore!
