The NPO hasn't gone anywhere. Not that I know of and i'm pretty sure most of the players are still performing on scores recorded in London like Ronin, Unbreakable, Shrek and others. Just because you don't see the title National Philharmonic listed on the cover or backcasing of a cd, doesn't mean they aren't performing. As for the Hollywood Symphony Orchestra or Hollywood Studio Symphony as the L.A.Musicians call themselves. This is part of the deal that the L.A. musicians made with the union in order to reduce re-use fees for soundtracks recorded in L.A.. Because of this the re-use fees have gotten lower and all performers on a score, MUST be named inside the soundtrack album. And that is why you've seen all the musicians named on soundtrack released on Varese and a few others and we're definetly getting more and more music than we used to in the past along with more soundtrack releases. Kudos, the the musicians after all they're the ones making the magic with their performances and it's well deserved. P.O. The Bourne Identity (John Powell) Recorded in L.A. ****

As previously noted, The National Philharmonic Orchestra were made up from the best players from the big London orchestras, They were created by Sidney Sax, as a recording orchestra, however they did actually appear live at The Royal Albert Hall, in concerts of film music, in 1979 FILMHARMONIC 79, guest conductors Alyn Ainsworth, Stanley Black, Barry Grey and Ed Welch. The compere was Christopher Reeve. The theme of the concert was 'Pinewood Magical Musical Mansion'. The National Philharmonic returned the following year Filmharmonic 80. introduced by Elaine Stritch and Donald Sinden. Guest conductors Richard Leonard, Geoff Love, John Addison. Previous years concerts were by The London Symphony Orchestra, and The Royal Philharmonic. I still have many of the original glossy programmes. Happy days.
