I am a fan of this movie but I have never come across the score in any shape or form on CD.

Is it simply that it has never been released or is it out of print or something.

I believe there was a short suite recorded for Silva's Spielberg/Williams set, a few years back. But to date there has never been a CD of the original tracks.

Its a shame really, the music sounds interesting if not groundbreaking.

Isn't the composer of the music Billy Goldberg better known for T.V music not Film Scores.

Which is fitting, as DUEL was a tv movie...

Had to re-acquaint myself with the music as it's been a long time since I've seen the movie. Definitely worth seeking out as it's a great road thriller. I'd like to see this get released as well!

Sorry its Goldenberg not Goldberg as I suggested.

Many thanks for putting the available suite on here Francis, I don't know if it just my opinion but some of the passages sound a little bit Herrmann influenced.

Particularly with the drawn out cello motifs.

The score is VERY Herrmann-influenced.

It's not necessarily a score that appeals to me on CD, but I'm in favour of getting everything out there (music-wise) with a Spielberg connection. Goldenberg was his regular collborator in TV before he met Williams, so it's definitely an important relationship in the scheme of things.

great score, and a holy grail for many. Why would they replace it for European release? Revenge for all the AIP versions that replaced the original European scores? wink

I don't know the answer to that question if it is true. However, I do know that if the score was replaced, Billy Goldenberg did not know anything about it.

well, I was partially kidding. I wouldnt expect you'd know since you're the one asking if it even happened. Did you actually contact Billy about it, or did you read his response somewhere? A friend of his said that Billy has alot of his music including DUEL. Someone who knows him should check out his personal inventory and what could be released. I know there are Studio ownership issues to contend with, but some music can be released as composer promos.

I was told by someone that Bill Goldenberg's score was replaced when DUEL was shown as a feature in Europe. Can anyone verify this and do they know who did the replacement score?

If that's true, then it did not affect the score when I saw "Duel" projected theatrically and on TV in England (in both cases, the theatrical cut). And there is no mention of this in Steven Awalt's book, which covers "Duel" up and down, including quite a bit about the creation of Goldenberg's score and his working relationship with Spielberg, detailed in some pretty fascinating new interview material:

http://www.amazon.com/Steven-Spielberg-Duel-Making-Career/dp/081089260X

[Edit, in reply to jpteacher568 below: The 2002 FSM Billy Goldenberg article is very good, but Awalt goes into more depth specifically on "Duel"]

Billy would love to have more of his music out on cd, but the last cd released of one of his complete scores was BUSTING, a great Kritzerland release compliments of Bruce Kimmel.

I enjoy the CD as well as the movie (on dvd from MGM/Warner Archive).
So are you actually in touch with him, getting your info 2nd hand, or reading his mind?

You could always give me a phone call and I will tell you. Or would you prefer me to call you? We could have a three-way conversation with Billy and then I can clarify things I need to keep private.

I'd love to see this get released. The movie is a childhood favorite and I've always seen the score as an integral part. Even as a five year old, I recognized that what I was hearing was unorthodox and totally different than anything else out there, and lent a somehow primal quality to the narrative proceedings. It's incredibly effective scoring.

While the Hermann influence is obvious in some of the string writing, it is far less so in the incredibly creative percussion employment. There's a number of extended techniques and effects here that even today I can scarcely identify the origin of. The lack of brass and woodwinds helps add a distinct and unique sound to the score too.

If anything I'd say the score more strongly-resembles some of Richard Rodney Bennett's more "modernistic" scoring tendencies, i.e. those heard in VOICES or FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE than most of Hermann's output.

-you can email me, my address is in my profile.

I'd love to see this get released.
-there's a pretty good rip of the dvd's 5.1 audio online somewhere, sort of a music/effects track, that was the source for this youtube video. For the moment it's better than nothing.
