Coming later this month from Vocalion, the British CD outfit=

Double album of Si Zentner: "From Russia With Love," featuring assorted TV and movie themes of the late 50's, early 60's, with "Warning Shot," a six-movement suite from Jerry Goldsmith's score for that film, along with a sampling of his other TV movie themes, and, for good measure, don't ask me why, the classic movie-pop song, "Mona Lisa."

Available now for pre-order at Amazon.

(The label also offers a number of Geoff Love movie tune anthologies, including "Big War Movie," which was the only way I could hear Rozsa's "Green Berets" theme -- until Lukas Kendall was born.)

It's already out. I have it. I know some people don't like the jazzy reinterpretation of WARNING SHOT (and cues from A PATCH OF BLUE, VON RYAN'S EXPRESS and THE PRIZE as well as a kick-ass rendition of THE MAN FROM UNCLE), but I really enjoyed the LP when I was a kid. Unfortunately, it accidentally got trashed with all my other LPs at my mom's house years ago, so it was like being reacquainted with an old friend when I heard it again a few weeks back. I keep reading theories that the original recording of WARNING SHOT probably doesn't exist any longer so this may be the only recording we'll ever get of this score. I think Si Zentner's re-arrangement is actually a lot of fun. Recommmended for fans of Goldsmith's 60's scores.

I too have always liked the Si Zentner WARNING SHOT LP. I think it's a valid interpretation of the score. I'll certainly be picking up this new CD. (Hopefully SAE will stock it, as they have other Vocalion CDs.) And that won't stop me from also getting an actual soundtrack CD, should it materialize.

Having bought the album a couple of weeks ago (that advertised price is horrendous!) I can say that it's an interesting album. The Warning Shot cues are okay ... perhaps the source material is not that great ... but the accompanying album, titled From Russia With Love, is well worth the money.

If for nothing else it has a superb recording of Mr. Bernstein's The Man with the Golden Arm ... worth the (UK) price of the album alone!

Now THAT would cause me to rethink the Vocalion purchase. Will you have the full LP or only the WARNING SHOT tracks?

Wait a second -- no, I won't. I'll still want the FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE album.

(AND, of course, the La-La-Land disc.)

FANTASTIC MV!!!

This makes for a great twofer having the long awaited original tracks combined with the loved by some (like me) Zenter recording. Usually these twofers are of the original cues recorded for the film and then an album re-recording. This one is the original and what amounts to a cover album. Works for me!

Zentner's interpretation of The Gasser is quite good, although he straightens out some of Goldsmith's off-rhythm syncopation a bit. Nice though. The new LLL album will be worth getting for that plus Goldsmith's original version (if it's included).

Also there's the cue for Janssen shooting the bad guy at the end of the movie (is that really much of a spoiler? wink) that's a pure, gorgeous Goldsmith WTF moment that works brilliantly - sly build-up then barking dissonant brass crescendo. I watched that moment in the movie about 20 years ago and I remember thinking "Wow". Hopefully it's on the album too.

Boy, I miss the days when I could catch a movie and have my hair raised like that.
